If your a gamer, what's the point in upgrading to Sandy Bridge?

I'm sticking with my overclocked Q6600 for now. Sure, Sandy Bridge is a lot faster, but I don't feel that the Q6600 is holding me back enough at the moment to warrant a full platform upgrade (since I'd need a new CPU + motherboard + RAM).

Only game I can think of that might require a full upgrade is Half life 3.

Battlefield 3 imo just a guess but I think will use an engine like bad company 2.

All that matters is having a cpu that isn't bottlenecking your gpu.

I Currently have an 3-4 Year old C2D System;
Proc : E6550
4Gb mem
and a 8800gt

I'm probably looking at doing a Full system upgrade now that sandy bridge has been released, up to a 2600K and grabbing a new Graphics card also.

Anyone in a similar situation with something older than a generation or 2 ?

I had an overclocked E4500 and replaced it with a Q6600. I am going to wait until the end of the year if possible especially with AMD releasing their new CPUs in the next few months.

Yep, new Half-Life be it one of the episodes or a full new game, thats the day im updating!

I really doubt if Half Life Episode 3 or even HL3 will need only top end hardware to run on TBH. I suspect that Valve will make sure that their games can run well on even older computers as it will mean more sales for them.

Been on an i7 rig for 16 months ono, i can see me skipping SB as well, the i7 itself is way overkill for any game im playing, though ill upgrade the gpu's at some point in the future. Saying that though, there isnt much currently that sli 470's cant cope with.

same here

Gulftown 970 @ 4GHz (H20) and a GTX 480 (H20).

DESTROYS every game at max settings 1920 X 1200 on 24" Dell monitor.

Virtually the same except only 2gb RAM :(

I'm upgrading my current setup (in sig) to the 2600K as Kentsfield getting on now. Demanding games like Bad Company 2, GTA4, maybe Blops, etc.. is using 80%+ of my quadcore. Plus the bandwidth is measured at only 8.5GBps compared to my PC2-6400CS2 DDR2 ram of 12.8GBps. The CPUs limitation is noticeable in the framerates of Fraps on the more than capable 5970. Most games are played on High @1920x1200 with exception of the games listed above that hammer my framerates down to 30fps on busy environments - think of it like annoying online GPU lag.

Upgrading to the revised i7 2600K will mean higher framerates, and about 25GBps bandwidth which will come useful for HD movie rendering. The overclocking potential is meant to be much better from the review released on the 3rd January. There is a basic guide to get the Core i5-2500K to 4.5GHz on bit-tech which is much better than I thought was possible with Sandy Bridge. The average overclock on all the reviews read so far suggest 4.5GHz is easy to achieve - the highest I've seen is on bit-tech that managed 4.9GHz on i5-2500K, and 4.85GHz on i7-2600K. That means at those clocks, the max framerate beats a £820+ 980x @4.4GHz plus it uses only half the power! With liquid cooling it may be possible to reach 5GHz without resorting to the dangerous LN2 used just for benches. This all means for the games that require a higher CPU frequency than additional cores can manage to sustain higher min/max framerates before turning it into a slideshow.

I'm hoping OCUK will offer a decently priced SB oc bundle of at least 4.4GHz otherwise I will try it myself. Just for peoples info, the memory accepted is usually max of 16GB of dual channel DDR3 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz, or 2133MHz.

The AnandTech review speaks for it self to be honest. At 4.5Ghz - 4.9Ghz on air there is nothing than can touch Sandy (with the exception of a highly overclocked 980X).

Given that all I play is Blackops I would expect that a 2600K at 4.8Ghz would given a massive boost in frames over my QX9650.

Currently running an i7 860 system, i've got the benefit that upgrading to sandy bridge should only cost me £100-150 one i've sold my current board + chip as the ram etc is all fine as it is (8GB Patriot 1600mhz stuff)

No reason for me to upgrade really apart from the upgrade itch....i see new tech and i wants it :D Reckon i'll jump on board before my current parts depreciate in price so much that it would cost me a lot more to upgrade in the future.

Yeah I'm in the same boat.

E6700 (albeit overclocked currently to 4Ghz)
4+ year old PCI-E 1.0a motherboard
4GB DDR2

Anyone else find it mildly frustrating having to rediscover whatever is the current best thing for each component? When I last bought memory it didn't come with these elaborate heatsinks or fans. :o

I play black ops with v-sync enabled and with my core i3 540 at 3.8Ghz I am running at a steady 60fps for the majority of the game.

Your QX9650 must be doing more than that so I don't understand how you need more fps that you wouldn't notice.

I'm guessing you play with v-sync disabled but the refresh rate of your monitor is what?

If you're serious about gaming you'd understand v-sync is a no no though. The input lag you get when using it is crippling.

Without going in to the v-sync / why do i need more than 60fps, lets just say that I prefer higher FPS and leave it at that :)

I'm also using a Q6600 at 3.60ghz. I put a 460gtx in a few months ago and installed an SSD last week. Still feels plenty fast enough, even playing games in 3D :/

I might try pushing it to 3.8ghz sometime.

my dilema (well not really a dilema) is that ive got a good cpu i7 860 but a bit of a weak mobo, i fancy being able to sli or xfire so need a better p55 board, but a half decent one is going to cost a whack so might aswell then just get s1155 surely?

decisions decisions, i could always wait and see if any maximus boards come about :)
