If your a gamer, what's the point in upgrading to Sandy Bridge?

my dilema (well not really a dilema) is that ive got a good cpu i7 860 but a bit of a weak mobo, i fancy being able to sli or xfire so need a better p55 board, but a half decent one is going to cost a whack so might aswell then just get s1155 surely?

decisions decisions, i could always wait and see if any maximus boards come about :)

I've a cracker of a P55 motherboard, but a very poor overclocking i7 860.

Typical :(

I'm a bit tempted. Could keep my ram, and change the cpu and mobo for a 2600k system, for an outlay of around £150.

If you're serious about gaming you'd understand v-sync is a no no though. The input lag you get when using it is crippling.

huh I suppose if your a pro gamer then yes but if your a pro gamer you will be playing on a crt at the lowest graphics quality and at 640x480 so your lag is 0.0001 ms less then a competitor....:P

I am a "serious gamer" and always use vsync and have never experienced this mouse lag people speak of.

As somebody else said if your getting 60fps in your favourite games then the extra few frames sb provides is either here nor there.

i dont like the tearing iget get with vsync off.so i leave it on cant say ive noticed the lag either...

My build will do me for another couple of years, will probably just upgrade the GPU, I think its the 4.7GHz OC factor will entice a lot of peeps.

Sticking with my 920, I can run her at 4.4Ghz all day long but there is no point so I keep it at 3.8Ghz, sandy is no upgrade for i7/i5 owners.

is exactly right, the e-peen swinging urge will always prevail among the younger members on here...typical teenagers :p

^^ lol. I think I'm the only one around who will see astronomical differences, since I'm currently number crunching with the Phenom 9850, which bsod as soon as I try oc past 3.0ghz <<< :0, and then bottlenecks my 4870 OC <<<< :0

i5 2500k it is.

What motherboard do you have?? You could sell your current Phenom 9850 and get one of the newer AMD CPUs which will be faster and probably will overclock better.

On top of this it is only another 4 to 6 months until AMD releases Bulldozer too. More competition for Intel will mean lower Core i5 prices too!

So no point in upgarding the system in my Sig then with a SB setup??

If I was you I would be looking at a better graphics card for that machine, you have a very nice setup there and not worth you updating to Sandy Bridge right now.. Maybe net generation would be the perfect time for you to update the CPU.. For now you would be just wasting money..You should look at a GTX 570 or AMD/ATI 6950 and unlock it to 6970.. That would be the best way to invest your money to see any real world gains to your gaming.

Yateszy same applies to you as I said above for lettuce. If you are using a 64bit OS also would be worth adding another 4GB of ram (you may need to redo your overclock again to get it stable with the added ram).

So is anyone going to move from their x58 setup?

Just interested :) I'm staying with mine and just getting a long-awaited ssd I think.

Get the SSD mate and wait for the next generation CPUs ... You have a very well balanced high end system as it is. Also remember LGA 2011 replaces LGA 1366 (later in the year) so we maybe seeing 8 core cpus then too, for sure will be some 6 cores.

Dunno if anyone has pointed it out but most gamers are GPU-limited these days, unless they own a really low clocked quad-core or less than 3 core CPU.

Most of the reviews focus on testing Sandybridge's raw power testing them at low resolutions or in CPU-bound scenarios.

It doesn't in the slightest reflect the true gains a gamer would experience from owning on of these CPUs over a quad i5 or Phenom II X4.

See this for some comparison, Dragon Age, one of the few games that apparently uses more than 3 cores, still relatively low resolution (1680x1050):

An upgrade to i5 2500k from my current platform would cost me at least £60 (with a cheapish motherboard) and probably £90 to match the capabilities of my current one. I'd rather put this money toward OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB or other SSD (and that's where I'm leaning towards atm).

Crysis Warhead, 1680x1050, minimal gains, probably due to clocks anyway:

Far Cry 2, same situation:

Fallout 3:

Absolutely nothing in it for me.

Yeh I think I'll wait for the intel 6 core chips on the new platform. Having said that, it'll still depend on price. Don't plan to spend anymore than £300 on cpus and likewise gpus.

SSD in the meantime :)

Yes i'm waiting to see what LGA 2011 will bring to the table and if there will be some 8 core CPUs at a good price I will be updating then... I just can't seem to temp myself to even get a 2600K at moment, I just feel it's not a big enough jump for me still.

im trying to skip the ddr3 generation and waiting for ddr4, i think thats when i will see the next big improvement that makes it worthwhile for me to upgrade.
