VAT increases?

the fuel going up is the real kicker its already nearly 130p a litre, inflation is going to go through the roof if fuel keeps going up as it effects everything food, goods etc

With the coalition already in chaos and a year of Tory economic incompetence ahead we can only hope Labour get back in soon.

Get it right. After 13 years of Labour incompetence the Conservatives (and Liberals) have their hands full trying to get us on the road to recovery. There won’t be incompetence just enormous challenges to get us out of this stinking mess created by Labour.

*yawns* How long is this myth going to be allowed to persist? The coalition inherited and improving economy out of recession that is now deteriorating thanks to their policies e.g. house prices were stabilising until the government abolished HIPS, causing a flood of semi-serious sellers and subsequent house price falls. Before all the housepricecrash mob arrive, I hope it's obvious to everyone else why stable house prices are important for consumer confidence and the economy at large.

Hahaha.

You get it right.

Road to recovery. LOL

WE ARE SINKING.

NO TORY OR LABOUR MORON CAN SORT THIS ONE OUT.

Neither was it created by labour, Westminster has managed to create this lovely fiscal meltdown over decades, all political spectrums included.

blah blah deficit its all an excuse to push a right wing agenda, if they cracked down on tax avoidance on vodafone alone we wouldnt have to make half the cuts and all have to suffer VAT and fuel increases!

I went to my local Chinese takeaway last night, there was a sign apologising that an extra VAT charge would be added to the menu prices, and the old boy there had a sheet of paper that looked a bit like:

£1->£1.07
£2->£2.13
etc.

Sure enough I had the usual which normally comes to £5.95 actually came to £6.47 last night. Not sure the 2.5% VAT increase has been correctly applied there but I was hungry and I know better than to argue with the Chinese.

Typical that they are deceiving the public, prices should increase by 2.1% not 6.5%.

A lot of people are also confused, thinking it should be a 2.5% increase (17.5->20). Although I doubt as it's a 0.4% error in their favour, they'll be quick to understand it :).

Any economics experts on here?

Do you think in the last 5 years or so that with consumer goods becoming much cheaper with ecommerce and supermarkets etc that gross consumer spending has decreased, meaning a lower government income from VAT? Or have the cheaper prices increased consumer spending to offset this?

I'm still trying to find an interview where Cameron stated that if VAT / Petrol went up then the other would go down....So far both have gone up and neither have gone down :p
