I was looking forward to DoWII before it came out and downloaded the beta on steam as I had soulstorm registered on steam.

Just didn't like the change from the original to the new, seemed like CoH reskinned :(

Is it worth getting the DoWII pack for £9.99 ?? or just stay away? :(

I still think the original DoW was the best for singleplayer and think I spent the most time on Dark Crusade for online play :D

I enjoyed DOWI and II. Just need a merger of the two now. The scale of DOWI but the RPG style squad building from DOWII. Would be nice to have loads of squads and be able to customise them all like the characters in DOWII.

Nope, i prefer the old basebuilding 40k :(

Agreed. After playing DOW 2 it just doesn't feel like the same game. Fun non the less and in fairness it does seem a lot more fast paced regardless of the lack of 'army size'

However retribution looks good. Will get round to buying it eventually and will probably venture for Orks. Always been one of my favourite races, I play them in Warhammer 40k tabletop game too :)

Also on the CD image above, looks like there's a sister of battle on the front? Can see them introducing SoB as the next playable race tbh

The first games were a lot of fun though didnt really require any tactical thinking beyond build a big force and throw it at the opposition.

I could see they had to do something a little different to keep it fresh but i couldnt get into the second one.

For me there hasnt been game that has made the most of the 40k universe yet.

The 1 thing i didn't like about DoW2 were the bosses. It wasn't so bad on the lower difficulties but the higher ones you just got raped so badly if they touched you and it pretty much just boiled down to saving all your 'asset support' items for the final fight.

It did have some awkward points like how you didn't really have much choice between heroes and how you were basically forced into using 1 set all the time or you'd just end up underlevelled and it always annoyed me that Cyrus' sniper rifle is basically 10x better than the others (supressing fire was debatable but shotgun and flamer seemed useless compared to assassinating some powerful target a long way away).

Just playing it again for a bit on Normal, basically running around with the Commander buffing the team and melee'ing, Thaddeus dropping from the sky and lobbing stun grenades, Cyrus for the occasional bit of stealth, demolition and HVT assassination and Tarkus for his Tactical Advance and grenades (might get him melee weapons too. Great fun.

What I don't get is why they don't make a game that's actually like the table top game. You could pick your army before hand from the army list, gearing them up the way you wanted. Then it could be turn based, it would be damn good and would really set itself out from all the cookie cutter RTS games out there.

The nearest experience to that would be the WH Epic 40000 scale Final Liberation that was released in the late 90's kept me up to the early hours of the morning, I still have my boxed copy but don't know if it would work on Win7. It would be nice to see a remake with todays 3d graphics.

I never understood the attraction of Dark Crusade. It was all just random map skirmishes. I tried a few times to get into it, but the fact that your space marines had to put down the imperial guard always annoyed me :)

Ha yes - there was a rather ludicrous plot point to justify it all which didn't really work... The skirmish thing is a fair criticism - but then again the other ones in the series were very story driven so it was offering something a bit different. And the retaining of bases on conquered provinces was a nice touch and seemed a tad more realistic - in Soulstorm this changed, meaning starting from scratch every time which was a pain. Dark Crusade could also be a real struggle on the 2 base enemy maps if you didn't get in early with honour guard!

Re final liberation - recently tried to get this to work again, but no truck. I remember really liking it and then trying to play through on hard 2nd time - and the first mission, due to a turn limit (iirc) was actually impossible to complete as a result!

The original DOWII missions involve you having to fight your way across a map to fight a boss. Wash, rinse, repeat. It got a tad boring after a while. :(

So the imperial guard are a playable race in this expansion, in single and multiplayer? I loved winter assault, I hope this expansion is more like that.

I fail to see what is bad about this? CoH in my opinion is the best rts of all time... people say they miss their large bases and their resource collecting but when was the last time you played an rts and remember that totally badass bit of resource collecting you did? :)

CoH completely changed rts for me it was no longer about getting resources, building a large army, attack moving to their base when a couple of units could quite happily kill your entire army if you tried that and all about the battle itself

Sure ive stopped playing both CoH and Dow and replaced them with SC2 (actually i have currently replaced this with League of Legends) but in their prime they were the best there was.

Not sure why i felt the need to defend either game, maybe cus they were both so awesome...

Also the people talking about the single player are missing the point... Single player as with every other genre is something you do while ur internet connection is having issues the rest of the time you should be online playing matches so the single player having bosses is not an issue (although yes they were a bit dull)

On the actual original topic though a number of things worry me about this game... They have removed GFWL (good) but this is a double edged blade as they are not updating the original to adapt to this and so people still playing dow2 or chaos rising will not be able to play against people with the new game.

also yes they have upped the pop cap (not that i ever had a problem with the population size) but again i think this will just dumb down the game to be a build big army... charge which is not what i would like.... People have mentioned the tabletop game... im fairly sure in that if you play as the space marines u have a couple of tactical squads.. some terminators, maybe a tank and ur done so that seems about right for the scale of things really (although yes the tac squads should be 10 men)

Also i worry about the whole 6 different versions of the game... is this a case of pick the one u want for some extra wargear or pick the one u want to play their missions!?

I much preferred DOW2 personally. The advancement and wargear really sold it for me. Really started to get attached to the squads and would try hard to keep them all alive to get the extra bonus. Really liked the expansion too, played it twice sticking to completely loyalist and then going full rogue the second time around.

I never really got into CoH despite buying CoH and CoH:OF :(
I just loved how you could upgrade and re-inforce on the move on DoW :D

Cool, I might look at SC2 :D

I am playing League of Legends at the moment and am enjoying it, but not bothered with SC2 as heard so many mixed reports about it.

SC2 is not on same scale of SC:FA...League even, how could they make a sequel made 2 years after the original look even worse, and play worse???? Dumbed down, less units etc.

with the bosses they would only come out at you so far then go back to their "den" again so id contantly be going backwards and forwards

My collector's edition arrives today, so I'll be trying it out tonight. I've heard mixed reviews from US friends who've had it since Tuesday. I think they generally like it, but the 6 race campaigns are basically the same but with buildings replaced on maps, etc. Still, more Dawn of War is never a bad thing!

I have been playing it this morning and really like it, cant comment on the campaigns being repetitive only on my first one so far. But the stages are differant instead of being fixed to a set of four units you have much more choice of upto four heroes or their squad if you dont want them. Then in each mission you can recruit more normal units to build up as larger force you like or buy upgrades for the heroes.
