Quick questions:

Is there a survival multiplayer mode like DoW2? I quite enjoyed that, but it needed more variety in terms of maps, waves, and player numbers.

I assume there are skirmish modes?

Yes to both of those. Though I've not tried either thus far, so can't vouch for if anything has changed about them.

i have added my name :)

really enjoying the campaign to start with. the missions seem more than just a trapse through a bunch of enemies for the sake of it,
with chaos rising i felt that the game lacked the imagination of the first DOW2
there was not a lot of interesting objectives and i felt like clicking on the end point of the map would allow me to complete the mission

with this it does feel that the fragility of the troops means that the tactics have to be altered a lot. the amount of enemies is balanced well with the heroes powers and abilities which makes for interesting firefights.
the campaign maps i have played so far have a lot of interesting choke points and flanking opportunities which i felt that CR missed.

i like playing as Guard so far, makes a change from playing space marines and wading in on everything

going to have a proper bash on multi later but i am really loving the steam integration so far.

just wish i knew more about the mythology about the series.
never really been interested in WH just like the DOW games which frustrates me a little as i dont know much about the background :(

must say, i am quite impressed with the extras presented in the collectors edition too. made it worth not purchasing via steam

i am down as rjkoneill on everything i play so add me if you fancy a game :)

Read the Horus Heresy novels, there the best books ive ever read.

The other good books in the WH40k universe are the Gaunts Ghosts novels (about an imperial guard regiment), the Isenhorn and Ravenor books (about Inquisitors and the general life an intrique of the Imperium) and the Ryans World series which focus's on space marines.

If in doubt look for something written by Dan Abnett.

I think im gonna read gaunts ghost next after i finished the Horus Heresy series. But that could be ages away im only on book 5 Fulgrim and there still make more:D

Been playing Last Stand on Chaos Rising.

Got to lvl 15 SM and just unlocked the Dread. Good fun but the lack of maps kills this.

Played the MP in DOW like crazy and got pretty good at it with Space Marines. Played like a **** but spamming turrets though lol. Never got into the MP with DOW2.

I lost yesterday afternoon to the campaign - it was pleasant enough - but I don't think it's value for money.

Feels more like an adventure game than an RTS.

Anyone bought the DOW 2 book?

The original 3 DOW books [compendium = the 3 + the short story extra] were quite good I thought.

First 3 Horus Herecy books I thought were reasonable but not great. Certainly worth getting the first two as by the end of the 2nd its set the full scene. Definitely good background material. You can then decide whether you want more from that era or not without feeling that you are missing out too much. If you have a Spesh Mehreen table top army based on a canon chapter, or Chaos Marine big name chapter, then you are pretty much forced to buy the book relating to that chapter.

I would only recommend getting the first Gaunt's Ghost book compendium. You can still get the rest if you are desperate for more of them after that but I'd had my fill by the end of it. Couldnt stand the other Imperial Guard Commissar line of books, the Ciaphas Cain novels. [Think nice Black Adder in space but fail humour]

Anyway. DOW2 Retribution. The Ork Campaign makes it worth the money. Too funny.
So far none of the levels have been as good as Chaos Rising's best [ork weapon stash, the space hulk ones, palace one] but the campaign still feels quite good as it gives you options and seems to have better balanced gear and powers.

Been burned by DoW2 tbh, absolutely dire compared to the first.

Will wait for a proper sequel and hope they get back to being faithful to the game :(

Totally with you there. I really really wanted to like it (even without the basebuilding) and played it lots but it really is a turd of a game.
The fact it received such good reviews is perplexing - DoW using the Dow2 engine would have been preferable!

Most people expect a sequel to build upon what was good about the first, add some more, improve graphics etc.

Relic instead created an entirely new type of game. While I agree it's simply not as much fun as the original (which is the best RTS ever in my opinion), it's still a very good game, and in terms of current generation RTS games, I play it a lot more than I do Starcraft 2. All you have to do is shake off the memory of the first, which is probably quite difficult for some people.

The people complaining about base building being there in the first place for the DOW1 games probably wouldnt agree with you. Lots of people upset about it being there when DOW first came out.

Base building in DOW1 single player was at best an irrelevancy and many arguably considered it heresy in terms of the fluff. It made no logical sense story wise or game play wise for the single player missions.

When was the last time you went back to DOW1 single player? Try it. Its a bit naff by today's standards.

Having played Retribution a fair bit now, I'm not sure I like the new additions. Personally I've found the 'armies' to be little more than cannon fodder, and some of the heroes themselves are frankly useless. At least with Chaos. The whole game to me feels like change for the sake of change. How-ever, I'll keep playing, and maybe in the future a balance patch will sort things out.

Just finished it on normal as the marines in just under 3 hrs. Thats doing all the sidequest. Even though it was short i really enjoyed it and felt like a god come the end just making enemies explode:D
Still got to do all the other campaigns so if you look it at that way theres quite a few hours to put in.

Warhammer has always been about the epic Space Marines being outnumbered, but coming out on top. In DoW I it felt really cheap being able to spam such powerful soldiers. In DoW II you have just a few heroes and you really feel just how formidable they are.

I love the DoW II gameplay and I am glad they did away with base-building. For those who like to spam units, you can now do that in Retribution. Mostly win-win.

Absolutely loving this game, not got far due to insane levels of coursework but I far prefer DOW2 over the first. Much more thinking required and multiplayer is never the same (when you could get a game that is). By far the most addictive game I have resulting in me racking up about 160 hours on the first 2 instalments and I'm not half the gamer some of you folks are.

As you can see from the thread so far that opinion is divided. Only you can ultimately say if you like it or not. I wouldn't say it was better than CR, but it isn't any worse. The story may change my mind, but only played around 4 missions so at this stage it could go either way! :)
