Basically he told the Police that he was robbed by two people with a knife when in actual fact it was a complete lie, he made the story up for insurance fraud so that he could get another iPhone for free, bloody unbelievable seriously, he only told me this tonight because he has a meeting with the local Sergeant tomorrow as they obviously want to know more information as being robbed at knife point is no joking matter.
Now I know people are going to give my mate a lot of flack but he has never done anything like this before, no police record, he's only 23 years old and not the brightest when it comes to stuff like this, try to trust me when I say that he really isn't a bad person.
Basically he told me he went into the Police Station to say he was robbed thinking that it would be an easy way to get a crime reference number for the insurance claim, God knows why he thought that would be a good story I'll never know, anyway he was asked whether they had a knife and he told me he said yes knowing straight away that he shouldn't of said that and things got from bad to worse.
He said he was quite nervous and ended up over embellishing the story, by this point the lie just ended up growing and growing as they asked more questions, next thing he knew they were taking official statements and his shirt for evidence, he said by this point he was too scared to tell the truth and was thinking maybe he could just follow it through.
Now I've had a go at him but he is genuinely scared about the situation he has got himself into and is worried that it's going to ruin his life, he has just been excepted into a local universality and believes this could effect that adversely, I'm not sure if that is the case though?
End of the day he is a friend that has made a mistake and I know that he regrets it and tonight he was asking me what to do, now I asked him to tell me everything he told the Police and from what I can gather there seems to be is quite a few inconsistencies and plot holes in his story that could potently come to light and because of this I have advised him to confess.
Do you think I advised him correctly?, he himself says it's want he wants to do but is scared as he is in too deep, but I kept reiterating to him that the consequences from not confessing could be a lot worse if this case carries on any further and they find out that he's lied.
Right now he is sleeping on it but he has a meeting with the Sergeant at 1pm today, he said a couple of times that he might wait and see what the Sergeant says first but I don't think that's a good idea, personally I think it's better he goes straight to the cop shop in the morning and tell the truth, A) it's the right thing to do and B) it will lesson the damage compared with if they find out later, from the police's perspective it doesn't seem very remorseful waiting to see if your going to be caught out before admitting guilt.
------------------------------
Out of interest considering he has no prior's if he confesses what do you think will happen to him? I guess they can do him on perverting the course of justice right?
Worst/best case scenario?
I'll fill you in on tomorrows (or rather later today's) developments when I get news.

He actually went into the police station this morning and told them the truth and he was let off !!, not even a cuation !
He said that the segeant said it was good of him to admit the truth when he did, he said if it had went on any longer he could have arrested him.
With regards to the phone the sergeant said to ring o2 and tell them it was recovered, man if it was me I'd want to kiss that sergeant.
