...apparently o2 said to keep the new phone and just send back the old one...
What did he say to O2 to inform them that the phone which was stolen at knife-point had miraculously turned up?

why would you report a phone as stolen to get a free phone anyway because the old phone gets turned into a brick when you report it stolen![]()
Oddly enough yes, I know other people won't see it like this but perhaps that was karma giving him a small pat on the back for doing the right thing.
The only reason he did the 'right thing' was because he was about to be caught red handed, it had nothing to do with a sudden change of heart or anything.
23 is a kid? I had two kids myself at that age. Young and naive maybe, but I am still not convinced that he has got away with it.
I think the Sergeant did the right thing, but ultimately it is not his decision whether to prosecute or not, particularly if the insurance company discover that the incident number refers to a false statement.

This! If everything was going smoothly i really doubt you/your friend would have admitted to anything. Otherwise you wouldn't have done it in the first place!
Let off very lightly IMO, insurance fraud is insurance fraud. I'm having to pay £40 a year for my phone insurance (iphone 4), and its becuase of people like your friend.
I can't help but think the OP is being spun a yarn here.
OP's mate: I lied about being the victim of a violent crime officer.
Police: No problem on you way son.
OP's mate: Hello the phone that was stolen of me at knife point, I lied it never happened.
O2: That is fine, keep the new phone we sent you anyway.
It just doesn't stack up!
Didn't feel bad enough to give the phone back though.
It is not about being authoritarian, what resources were tied up dealing with a crime that never existed?
we all know its reallt the op and hes only now saying hes told the police he lied and they let him off...
we all know hes only saying this because people were saying if someone was to contact the police about this thread the OP would get in trouble.. theres even a few regular posters that are police officers , hes bricking it and obviously didnt really goto the station to say he lied.
its all far to fast! stuff like that doesnt happen in a matter of hours!
