visited the purple shirt place tonight,

You really are sad if yo were at the till and then spat your dummy out lol. Shocking

ok i'll ask you, how many times would you have to say no to someone before loosing the rag and walking off?

repeatedly told him DID NOT WANT, he ignored what i was saying so i took my business elsewhere

i ended up walking away leaving the wife to deal with him and sat in the car wondering how many ways i could kill someone using only a usb cable?
lol :D

I tend to avoid the purple shirt place and its ilk but when I do go in I rarely get the 'hard sell' (or whatever they call that nonsense you were bombarded with).

But when they say something along the lines of, "You need to buy this ridiculously expensive HDMI cable" it does worry me a bit. I have to ask myself, "Bloody hell, do I really look that stupid?" :p

I don't understand why people get so annoyed over stuff like this. I've been in the same situation a few times and i just shrug it off, be polite to the salesperson and make my purchase. It's the customers that i see acting like big babies i want to punch in shops, not the assistants

If the customer got that way then it's the salespersons fault.

A cousin of mine bought a Dell laptop from there last year. He had the choice of getting one with Norton security installed or without. He chose to buy one without as it was cheaper. The guy told him that if he did that he wouldn't be able to use it on the internet.

What a load of total, utter nonsense! He bought it without the security, took it home and put AVG free on it. Why these people spout such drivel is unreal.

We don't get commission.

I actually work for Dixons Retail so I know what would have been asked, sadly we are targeted on attachment's...On that laptop Advent 201? there is no margin in it...so customers taking AV/bag/Tech Guys is where the money is made....Selling the What ever happens is the big one.

This is perfectly true.

Having worked at said place, it is dire. Sales colleagues are taught to overcome objections, yet many of them cannot and blatantly BS. It is sad and I can see why the OP is so annoyed.

I worked as sales and hated it, I've worked as Customer Services, and hated it. The only thing I did enjoy in there was merchandising ...

Funnily enough I had a grievance meeting today :)

They are trained to be like that...

As a former employee (last century thankfully) the salespeeps are under pressure from management to push the added extras. The purple shirt place are basically knocking the PCs out at a low margin and make a huge markup on the extra's which is where the profit comes from. The salespeeps at that time were on a low basic wage and got a better rate of commission on the extras as an incentive.

It's the same with the partner store that sells TVs and the like. No margin on the TV, hence why they try and stiff you with a £50 HDMI cable that's "essential" to connect up your Sky HD box.

The salesdrones are not technically trained so don't realise what they're spouting is rubbish.

You were at the till, just pay up and leave.

And you took your business elsewhere, you stuck it to the man. the same man that you went and fed your money to in another store. Well done. you achieved nothing :p

Hm, so in those 8 years you've never come across a customer that flipped over something silly or came in looking for an argument?

Of course there was the odd drunk :p

I worked all over the North West, Wirral, Warrington, Liverpool, Chester, Widnes, Runcorn and Northwich. Nobody got upset at anything I told them because I took the trouble to learn about the products and made sure they were happy with their purchase. You can't argue with that.

I did have colleagues that got into trouble. One was taken to court for telling lies during a sale of a washing machine. The customer paid £600 and it didn't have any of the features they'd asked for. He assumed it did everything because it was expensive. They got their money back, he lost his job.
