I have never really used the app, I always just visit the full site on my phone.

However after looking at and and having a go, apparently it supports push notifications in version 1.5, which I have running on android 2.2.

However I don't seem to be getting any push notifications, I only get the notification when I open the Facebook and and refresh it.

Is anyone getting push notifications?

seems hit and miss, I have the same account sync'd to my blackberry and my desire, sometimes the htc actually notifies me quicker than the BB but sometimes it doesnt for a while, i think if i have had facebook open since i started the phone it's quicker though if that makes sense?

I get you yeah. Did you have to configure anything or change any settings to get the notifications?
For example in the Facebook app, under settings:

Refresh Interval?

Or should it just happen

I let the Gmail app handle the push notifications for Facebook personally.

Doesn't help if you particularly want the Facebook app to do it for you, but just a thought.

How do you do that? Although improved, I can't wait for the Android app to be decent!

I guess he just associates his gmail account with his Facebook one so notifications go to his gmail account so he gets a push email.

I do the same thing, just use emails and gmail push for them and then use the option 'sync with existing contacts' so my contacts have facebook profile links in them, I do all the pictures myself with google contacts, so don't get the facebook ones.

I don't really get why anyone would use these apps personally (especially considering the widely-publicised security hole in the Facebook app that leaked people's numbers a few months back!) The phone has a fully-featured browser so surely you can just visit the website and check your Facebook when you want to and on your own terms rather than having that thing suckle on your phone's battery's teat until it's dry and shriveled by checkign for updates every minute? It's pure app-mania, companies shoving programs of limited usefulness on you just to make sure you've got their logo on your homescreen and are constantly hooked on a drip-feed of updates!

completely wrong imo.

Having an app allows you to integrate a lot better with the rest of the phone, ie when i call someone it shows me their latest status update (can be handy if i know they're going to be in a bad mood :p), or from their contact page i can see their latest updates, all their latest photos etc from one place as well as messages they've sent me (email and SMS).

Also, being able to take a photo and just say "upload" rather than taking it, opening IE, going to the site, pressing upload, browsing my phone for the photo etc.

Also, if you leave a message asking someone if they want to do something, and they reply id like to know that they've replied, half the time i dont actually have peoples mobiles these days unless im quite good mates with them, just casual friends i just use facebook

Fair enough, can see the usefulness of the photos, not the messaging thing though - it basically means you expect the other person to be getting constant updates to facebook as well, whereas most people only check it a few times a day (if not just one!). I wouldn't want to be _expected_ to check Facebook every 15' to find out where I'm supposed to meet someone - if you want to talk to me right now you should call me, email and facebook are for non-urgent, not-realtime contact!

9 out of 10 people i know have facebook on their phones now, as the 3 big players in the mobile market all have apps (iphone blackberry and android). Also, who doesnt have push email to their phone these days either? :p

+1
Seems like the best way IMO.

Email's different, cause if you use it for business purposes and you're out of the office you need to be kept in the loop. But Facebook is non-urgent, I categorically refuse to check it every 5' because some idiot decided to use it as if it were text messaging or a phone and decides to arrange a night out with his friends through that! :p There's only so many different ways to contact me that I can check on a regular basis - even with my phone automating it and aggregating them all it has a massive cost (in this case on the battery life of the phone rather than directly on my time). Unless you're messaging me about meeting in a couple of days you can't be sure you'll catch me.
Guess at 32 I'm already old-fashioned and part of a previous generation! :p

I'm with this guy. You don't bother having a facebook or news app etc.. on your PC and there is no need on you phone. Visiting the website can offer a richer experience.

Still if people want the app then i don't see any harm.

I have to admit, I think the facebook app is quite poor, give it its due, it has got better. I much prefer to just visit the site in my browser...I was just interested in the notification idea....it's probably less annoying that it doesnt work for me! Cheers
