Some of you may have seen/read about my situation from other posts in other Apple threads, but I thought I'd combine them all to share my first Mac computer experience.

Getting a MBP has been on the cards for a while now, as I travel a lot through work, and I do a lot of photography as a hobbie I thought it would make sense to get one.....anyway....enough about why I got one.

On boxing day I ordered from Apple Store a brand new MBP 15" i7 with the high res anti glare display. So that's a pretty high spec laptop, with the bill coming to JUST shy of £2k.

On the 30th it was delivered.

I spent much of the day getting my head around a brand new OS, and everything Mac. Not long into this I kept getting errors when I entered my password to do things like install/edit files etc. At first I thought there was a problem as I knew I was putting in the correct password. Not long after I realised I WAS putting in the right password, but one of the keys on the keyboard wasn't registering everytime I put it in. The 'c' key would only work about 10% of the time in normal typing, and as my password contained a 'c', that's how I found the problem.

So that MBP had to go back, as you could only get the 'c' to work if you pressed really firmly.

Rang up..... explained....arranged a replacement.

About 5 days later the replacement arrived. As soon as I started to unpack it I noticed dents on the back panel of the laptop. As seen here:

Not long after I noticed heavy scratches on the front of the MBP, just by the trackpad, about an inch long (two in total):

Rang up.....explained......they said I could either have £70 credit or a replacement.

Initially I went for the credit, but I thought if I've spent £2k I want it to look the dogs nuts! So arranged another replacement.

That brings us to today.

I received my second replacement (third in total!) to find this on the screen:

I first noticed at work when I plugged it in, as my desk has a massive window behind, so there was some glare on the screen, and the massive scratch right down the screen jumped out straight away.

I must admit in a lot of cases you can't see it, but that's not the point. I've spent £2k on a laptop, I expect perfection.

I haven't done anything about it yet. I really can't be bothered to send it back again. A mate has given me the email of head of UK sales, so I might send a polite but 'to the point' email explaining my situation and disappointment.

I hope you lot don't think I'm being a picky/fussy 'whatever', at the end of the day I've spent a lot of money on this, and the products I have received have been disgraceful - especially considering this is Apple we're talking about.

Any advice for me on what to do next? I want a perfect working laptop, but the hassle of sending a third one back is really getting to me! Especially as wanted to take this out on shoots!!

Thanks for reading :)

^ I could. But my nearest is Birmingham. So I would have to go out my way and pay to travel there to replace it, and waste my time too.

But at least I would see it first! ;)

We had to get our imac exhanged. So Bluewater two weekend in a row(1 hour each way).Had a small chip in the screen. But it had to be done.

I might just ring up and complain and get the £70 credit! You never know, they may offer me more!

I still might email that guy though.

For near 2k I would want it absolutely perfect and I don't think thats unreasonable, I've had 2 dell laptops in the last 5yrs and both turned up in pristine condition and they cost a quarter of what your paying.
To be honest they've had numerous chances I'm surprised they arnt offering an exchange plus the £70 credit.

Send it back for another replacement. It seems like you have been very unlucky. I'd be livid if I were you. Maybe they're rushing them out the factory because of the high xmas backlog? Who knows.

Definitely forward the whole saga, including pictures to the sales guy. And don't accept a stupid voucher that only works on purchases of over xx amount from the apple store as compensation

Yep, that's not right and unless you're very very laid back £70 wil not deal with the irritation of seeing the scratch on the screen any time there's a bright light behind you. The store guys are great - tell them you're popping down, pop down and walk out with a laptop you've personally looked over. Maybe take the opportunity to sit in on one of the classes they run.

As already mentioned I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. I think you have been very unlucky and I don't think this is a typical experience.

I would definitely put in the time and effort to get this one replaced. I would also send an e-mail outlining the whole situation. In my experience Apple have very good customer service so I wouldn't be surprised if you got some discount or something free.

Apart from the guy I mentioned in my OP (which I'm finding more about before I email), any specific emails to try apart from a generic apple sales email address?

Yeh don't worry I wasn't being serious ;)

Trouble is, I already own an iPod Touch (1st gen) and I bought my mum an iPad for xmas, so there isn't much I would want really. We'll see what they say ;)

As I've said before that is totally unlucky!

I would suggest going to the store, I'd actually print off the OP with pictures as a illustration of the problems you've encountered!

:/

Guys, Ive written this email which I intend to send to the UK Director of Sales at Apple.
I've never written anything like this before, so wouldn't mind some feedback! ;)

Dear Mr x,

I am contacting you regarding a prolonged disappointment regarding my purchase of a Macbook Pro, and I have been reliably informed by a colleague who has previously contacted you that I will receive a helpful and efficient reply.

Recently I finally made the decision to purchase a Macbook Pro 15" i7 (Order number Wxxxxxxxx).

I was initially delighted to receive my first ever Mac, but soon after I found that there was a problem. The 'c' key on the keyboard would not respond properly, and in normal typing it would almost always be missed.

I contacted Apple Sales, and they quickly and efficiently arranged a replacement.

A few days later the replacement arrived, but I was appalled to find dents on the back panel, and then on closer inspection - large scratches on the front panel, near the trackpad.

Again I contacted Apple Sales and yet again they arranged a replacement.

Today I received the replacement, only to find a very large scratch on the display.

This has been an extremely disappointing experience. Apple is a company that is always keen to promote both the design and high quality of its products and therefore returning one Mac Book Pro, let alone three, is wholly unacceptable. I have expended a significant amount of time and effort trying to resolve the various issues, including taking time off work to wait for the home delivery of replacements.

For your reference, I have attached photographs to show the relevant damage to the Macbooks that I have received so far.

I am unsure of the next step to take, I have yet to contact Apple Sales again to arrange a replacement, as I am concerned that I will be let down for a fourth time.

I look forward to your reply on this matter,

Sincerely,

Daniel Freeman

Had a dent on my MBP near the trackpad when I received mine back in May. Got on the phone and explained, they arranged a replacement and gave me a choice of £70 credit or refund. Took the refund :) so wasn't that fussed waiting for a replacement. Really nice american chap who dealt with my replacement who kept me up to date and gave me a call to make sure it was in perfect condition. Seems you've been really unlucky though.

I'd give them hell. Likewise a dead-pixel or similar. For ~£2K it should be perfect.

Sounds good.

One point, it's "MacBook Pro" - note the capital 'B' and that 'MacBook' is all one string.
