Our cat has adopted a second home - anything we can do?

leave a note on his collar "do not feed I am on a special veterinary diet", "i am being treated for fleas do not touch"

or add cat nip at various places around your home and garden

I've had this problem when I was at Uni.

Housemate was the equivalent of your neighbour and let the cat take shelter with us and he also bought him food. The owner eventually came over and asked us not too, which we obliged but it doesn't take a lot for people to get suckered in.

Cats are meant to be fed twice a day, but they will always eat beyond their means if they can. They are outdoor animals by nature and therefore things like "cold, wet, rain, etc" really aren't a huge issue to them. Although if some shmuck is offering a warm dry place to sleep with some extra food, the cat isn't going to be stupid...

I'd say you need to go back to your neighbour and stress that the cat is still going missing and if they have been accomodating him to refrain from doing so.

You could pull the heart string angle too. The cat we had at uni, so we were told, belonged to a 6 year old girl and she used to be upset when he didn't come home at night or wasn't there in the morning. That was enough for everyone to see sense and stop letting him in for the good of his owners.

I suggest playing a similar card to be honest.

Why are you even letting it outside anyway?

I'm sure all your neighbors love the distinct lack of birds on their feeders and finding cat dumps in their flower beds.

When you get your cat back in your house, put some butter on its feet. The cat will lick the butter off its feet and this apparently makes the cat feel at home.

Or make the poor cat question the sanity of its owners and never come back....
did you just make that up?

Because a cats natural habitat is outside.
He will hunt, again it is in his nature to do so.
He's also a big cat (only a year old, but we believe he's half maine coone) so will take on most things.
However I doubt there is any noticeable decline in the wildlife due to him.

As for the cat dumps, I've got absolutely no doubt at all he does things in other peoples gardens.
However he will bury any mess he makes and if it's in a flower bed - it will actually act as a fertiliser.

Speak to the people that are feeding your cat, and ask them not to.

Did you really need a thread for this? :/

As I did say in my very first post - we have tried this approach.
We have asked them, nicely if they will stop letting him in and feeding him - alas this seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
So was just looking for some alternative ideas.

I'd go and have a stern word tbh. You tried being polite, didn't work. Don't yell, just tell them, don't feed the cat, and don't let the cat in, simples.
