Is this desperate?

Reminds me of when I was a kid and wanted an original Playstation when they first came out.

My rents said no way as they weren't keen on gaming. Probably as ever since they bought me an Amiga 1200 for 'schoolwork' all I did was game on it!

Anyway I saved up my money from doing chores and a handily timed birthday and went out and bought one. To sneak it in I had to leave it outside of my bedroom window which was on the bottom floor, go in and say hello, go to my room and lift it in and sorted.

Put it in a drawer with the cables routed through the back of my desk and they were none the wiser!

If you're paying for it yourself and have earnt the money you really should be allowed to spend it without all the sneaking around, if not sneak it in somehow!

Just thought I'd bump this and see if any other ideas have arisen.

I'm now 18, and tried to talk it over with them - was going well until my father came along, and stamped the entire thing down.

Even told them that I'm 18 now, its my money I can legally spend it on whatever I want, the response was you can buy it, but the parts are not going to get in this house, they will be binned etc.

They came up with the idea of will be re-viewed in August (after exam results) and on the basis of that may partially fund the PC. On the condition that PC stayed at home. Ofc I blew that idea out of the water.

So, any other ideas? Or is it time to update the bios and have a "power cut" in the middle?

Tbh, if it's causing this much hassle then it might be best to wait til your away at uni and just buy everything then. As you said they're not stupid and the computer suddenly becoming broken is quite coincidental.

Plus after 3 years of Uni you will probably want to get your own place anyway so no more issues about how you spend your money.

Although standing up for yourself may be a benefit in the long run!

Additionally, wives are much harder to convince when you tell them you need to blow a grand on some PC components!

You see, my Dad is quite serious when he talks about me finding somewhere else to live - so can't exactly push it.

Only things I can think of are indeed wait until Uni, and buy it then, kill it now (would look odd, granted), or just buy the parts (but then run risk of it being disposed of etc).

And 3 years of Uni? 4+PhD = around 8

If you agree to a review of it in august, you should get them to agree that if you get x grades then you are allowed to buy a pc/they fund it. Otherwise unless you get perfect grades they can always just say no again.

What is it they actually said beyond the simple no?

That's the issue. They'll help fund it, but PC -has- to stay at home, and my first choice Uni is an hour and a half away, so I would only be able to use it in holidays.

No point. Current PC is fine (even when told them that the £120 Graphics Tablet my uncle and aunt got me for my birthday can't be used as my PC can't run the software - fact by the way :mad:

). If not going to be gaming much then don't need a PC at all. They countered the idea of PC being much harder to steal than a laptop with "don't need either then, do you?"

No, PCs take time to build and don't have a spare 1hr for build and software install without parents noticing.

Similarly I can't get components without parents finding out.

Mate this is ridiculous! Do your parents not work at all? I used to schedule any upgrades around when they were both at work, not hard as I used to be able to go home from sixth form in my breaks (lived 10 minutes walk away

).
It's not that they would t let me, just that they got... Disappointed. And anyone knows that disappointed is far, far worse than angry

Mum mainly works at home with own business

And I have a LOT of extra-curricular activities. There's 2 nights a week (Tuesday and Friday) I don't have something going on, and don't tend to get home myself till after 5 - around the time Dad gets in.

Also, Stulid you're a lightweight

Oh and cookeh? Now you are 18, try going out on the lash. Unless they've specifically banned that too, it might be an idea just to unwind! Certainly helped me. But anyway, do you have a lock on your door? Jus thought it might be an idea to have stuff delivered to mates, pick it up then go do some "revision"

Failing that, offer to pay some board. I paid about 50 a week, kept my mum happy, meant I could waste the rest. And look at the system I have now!

(true, most of the stuff was ordered at Uni, but still
