Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a shock swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate as defensive cover.
Spurs defender Woodgate has struggled with injury for over a year, having not played since November 2009 due to a career-threatening groin problem. He now appears to be firmly on the road to recovery after coming through a reserve match against QPR in midweek.
Woodgate is not a registered player for Tottenham, after Harry Redknapp opted not to include him during the registration process for the first part of the season. However, with Woodgate returning to full fitness, he could be knocking on the first team door sooner rather than later.
This has alerted Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who is looking to strengthen his backline following injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and Sebastien Squillaci. Woodgate is seen as a temporary stop gap for the coming months, as it is unclear as to how long Vermaelen will be absent.
The former England international has endured a difficult two years in north London, with his Spurs career blighted by injury.
Redknapp remains uncertain over the immediate future of Woodgate, who signed from Middlesbrough in 2008, although there were suggestions that he would be loaned out, with Championship sides QPR, Leeds and Middlesbrough thought to be interested.
