Keys & Gray in Sexism Row

What are your feelings on this Tom84? Or are you happy that copy pasting an article is a reasonable level of effort when creating a new thread?

Anyway, women are sexist about men all the time and I honestly don't give two hoots. Any indignant feminist dykes being interviewed on TV complaining about the comments, should think about how sexist the female of the species can be to men and bring this up also, in the interests of balance.

They should also watch the South Park episode on the negative aspects of being over-PC.

The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.

When I first heard this story on the news this morning and heard the recording of this my first thought was that they knew they were being recorded, or had noticed their previous comment had been recorded and said the Karen Brady line to put some kind of "It was all a joke" spin on their previous comment, i.e. by saying something so ironic that the previous comment was also part of the "joke". Had Max Clifford been around this is probably what he would have advised Keys to do. But now I've seen that Keys denied saying this and didn't know there was a recording it does put a very nasty spin on the Brady comment. Keys obviously has some issues, can't see him or Gray appearing at Upton Park in the near future.

Wow it's descended into a "two wrongs clearly make a right" argument... didn't see that coming.

Why can't people just accept that things get said in JEST.

It's easy to accept when the abuse isn't aimed at you. Making sexist comments can only discourage women from watching Sky Sports' football coverage.

Ron Atkinson lost his job for making racist remarks. I'm sure he would have used the "it was only in jest" excuse as well. Why should racism be unacceptable and sexism acceptable?

Here's hoping that idotic pair that are Richard Keys and Andy Gray get the boot.

Does anyone actually like them?

Can't see it happening though, it seems Sky doesn't have the balls, much like the lineswoman :p

What does anyone expect, Gray and Keys are morons; they are employed by Sky to appeal to the lowest common denominator, unthinking, knuckle-dragging demographic who are most susceptible to advertising - they are not employed to provide any sort of informed analysis, commentary or education.

As said above, no idea how Atkinson can get sacked and basically shunned from football for life yet this will probably be swept under the carpet even though it's offensive to way more people. Also, none of it sounded like it was in jest, just the ramblings of two nasty old men. You expect much better from national broadcasters really.

Anyone can go "Tch, women drivers eh?" and everyone knows it is fairly comical. I would go so far as to say you can also go "Tch, women linesmen eh?" and it still be pretty tongue in cheek comical. But when you look at how Keys added the Karen Brady comment you can see he has obviously thought about this before, it is not an off the cuff comical remark, it is the sign of a definate deep seated view and he used the Karen Brady remark as evidence to justify his ideas. You just can imagine Keys reading the paper that morning and his mysoginst tendancies starting to go on the boil, so much he has stored that in his mind to bring up later. I think Andy Grays comment in this could almost be laughed off in a comical way as I decribe, but for Keys to chip in with his unprompted bringing up of "evidence" puts Keys in a very difficult position if you ask me.

I think racism and sexism is 2 totally different things altogether.

There's no way anyone is going to put one over on you:
  • RACISM is the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races
  • SEXISM is the prejudice that members of one gender are intrinsically superior to members of the other gender
Does this difference in some way justify what Keys and Grey clearly believe

If it was on the BBC then it would be a firing offense but I doubt Sky will care too much. 99% of the viewers are men who won't care hence Sky won't care.

Sky Sports may be 99% men - Sky in general though I would suggest is more evenly balanced (at a guess)

Depends on how national this goes and how long it lasts (ie if a lot of other media agency's pick it up and go with it , and keep it in the headlnes it MAY exert more pressure on Sky in general, I doubt it but you never know)

Considering Murdoch owns most of our media now, soon to be even more when the Torries allow him to take complete control of BSkyB.

So I expect this to be swept under the carpet.

I'm not sure I see the issue with this. What was said, was said off air, it wasn't broadcast, it was merely leaked by someone who recorded what they were saying off air. To me, that would be a bit like someone taping what they are saying whilst chatting down the pub. Even on this forum we had some banter about her, its going to happen , just as it does about male nurses , female oil-rig workers and male midwives.

They are there to commentate and analyse the game (whether they do that well is a different question :) ) , not to embody political correctness and make sure they don't upset anyone. Some would say that the beauty of skys coverage (particularly soccer Saturday) is that its like watching the football with a bunch of normal guys. Normal guys do such things.
There's no doubt plenty of guys make jokey comments about women (as the women drivers post above mentioned), and there's also no doubt that some men are actually sexist enough to believe of that nonsense. But surprisingly, quite a lot of men also don't think that women are utterly incompetent at doing anything other than putting the tea on.

And when you're supposed to be an impartial commentator on a football match, making so many blatantly serious remarks about the ability of a female official, before she's even done her job rather calls into question your neutrality, doesn't it?

A quick Google for "sun + keys + grey" or "'news of the world' + keys + grey" (both part of Sky's owners, News International) will show that you are quite wrong, they are absolutely OUTRAGED!

I'm sure that if Murdoch's Times wasn't hidden behind a paywall, the same would be true there.

Everyone's neutrality is in question. On air, they have to display neutrality. Off air, they do not.

They thought they were off air...

The embarassing thing for them as far as I'm concerned is that, as far as I gather, the decision they were berating her for was in fact the correct one?

Do you think Alan Brazil is neutral when he's commentating on Celtic Rangers?
