Hey, I started with social anxiety about a year ago after being depressed. (Got really bad hardly went out or spoke to anyone). Sadly the only way to get over it is to put yourself in the situations that make you start with it, just dont rush into it gradualy build up and try and keep calm.
(cant think about anything else about that)

For the tablets they give me never really made me feel much better, they just used to make me feel weird (high) but not in a good way :P in a away where i could hardly consontrate or anything so i stopped taking them.

Feeling a lot better these days, still get anxious but just try to calm myself down and carry on.

Exercise is a good idea.

Not joking here but if your confidence is a bit low, watch Iron man and Iron man 2 and imagine being tony stark, you will have more confidence.

it goes away when you drink alcohol because alcohol is a cns depressant. cns depressants 'dampen' your nervous system so to speak.

as for cds, what I used to use was a thunderstorm cd and a technique called the candle breathing technique, find a sound that relaxes you and use that.

to do it, you imagine there is a candle directly in front of your mouth and you cant blow it out. breathe in and out for 4 secs at a time. this will help you regulate your breathing and calm you down but you musnt blow that candle out!

another method is to lie on your back, and starting from the top of your body, tense each individual muscle you can and hold it for 30 secs, then breathe out slowly while relaxing it. then move onto next muscle.

still have to re-enforce the excersise thing..it is by far the best stress relief going.

The worst thing is there is this girl I met who I would absolutely LOVE to ask out but I feel as if she deserves so much better than me in my current state. I guess I could use her as my goal, as in - do this for 6 weeks, no slip ups - pure commitment- see how I feel.

Gah contains niacin, for people who are prone to flushing you shouldn't go anywhere near it!

Maybe she does, but that's not your decision to make - it's hers. Ask her out and not only do you give her a chance to decide but you also give yourself a chance to actually go out with her. Don't go setting up "targets" to hit before you "deserve" to ask her out as you are actually setting up excuses to not ask her out when you just miss your targets....

I'm going to start this routine on Monday the 28th February :) If you guys are interested I could update this thread daily. It would give me some discipline as well with regards to my progress :) If you'd rather I'd just leave you all alone that's understandable!

Just remember you're unique and cool, just sounds like you're growing up mate.We all went through similar stages, try not to take things too seriously.

Good advice in the above posts, especially to exercise and eat well. This may sound daft but the omega 3's in a good cod liver oil can help with stress/anxiety.

Good luck mate.

Doesn't sound daft at all but I took cod liver oil for 3 months and was ill the whole time. Probably just a coincidence but I stopped taking it and haven't been ill since.

Don't be too hard on yourself that you haven't managed to get a job, it really is tough for graduates at the moment.

Try to limit the amount of time you allow yourself for worrying, find something productive you can do instead. Over worrying never helps, you have to "rest" your brain from worry, so tell yourself you aren't allowed to worry and "block" the negative thoughts out. My theory is that worrying and worrying uses up your brain's reserves of neurotransmitters, so if you can mentally rest from it you will feel better.

Try and think of one interest you have where you can join a club and meet like minded people. Just remember all the other people go there because they want to meet other people.

Rgds

Where do you live if you don't mind me asking? After a couple of weeks, once you're more confident going out and about why don't you do some volunteer work at charity shops while you look for other work?

I'll just say I live about 20 miles outside London. Right now that suggestion doesn't sound great but in all honesty, it's a fantastic one.

For feeling hot and a burning sensation on the face with possible anxiety try Vicks Sinex with Oxymetazoline.

Completely removes flushing / feeling of heat.

Spread some onto your hand and dab on the face like aftershave.

I'd hope, seeing as you're having a bit of a hard time at the moment with your career and everything that this is an acute episode and will pass either on it's own in time, or with some short term help from docs. All the things you have suggested are great ways of picking up your spirits, it's not easy getting out of a rut and no one else can make you feel better inside your head, you have to make changes, but you've made a great start by making a list of things you want to do. Like everyone else said - get fit. Works wonders.

For inspirational books try:

Mad Bad and Dangerous to Know - Sir Ranulph Fiennes
It's not about the Bike -Lance Armstrong
Flip It - Michael Heppel

Source: I also have an anxiety disorder (OCD). I've had CBT and psychotherapy for it as it got pretty bad. I developed it about 8 yrs ago-ish now, but have got it under control. Although it still bothers me occassionally, such as if something major happens in my life; it doesnt really affect my quality of life as much as it once did, if at all 99% of the time.

I think this is medical related but I'll advise anyway.

Is it purely anxiety symptoms you are having? If so then it's easier. I'd personally recommend a any high rated book on Amazon on Anxiety.

Don't wait until Feb?! Start now! There's no use procrastinating. That's a whole month away. This routine will improve your life regardless, but you need to seize the day.

Procrastination is the root of all evil.
