Just read that review and it seems to tell me that the 480 and 560 Ti SOC are almost unseperable in terms of performance.

Makes me think that for the sake of a much quieter, less power hungry card the 560 Ti SOC is becoming the no brainer? So much so that I'm wondering why you'd pick the 480 over the 560 Ti SOC? What am I missing?

That's comparing a stock 480 and a heavily overclocked 560.

An overclocked 480 will be better.

As far as the end user is concerned though it's a valid comparison for somebody who wishes to buy a card, plug it in, and play. Although it's faster than a stock 560, it comes at that speed out of the box.

An overclocked 480 will be better.

I'd like to get an idea of how much better - as it's cheaper to buy the 480. My worry is that with the temps on a 480 already through the roof just how much overclocking headroom is there?

Looks like I've got 6 days to make my mind up

Don't forget the 460 is down on V-Ram as well, which may not be an issue now, but as you move to a higher res and as newer games come around, I think I'd rather have the extra.

Yeah the 480 is at stock 700Mhz, as for power consumption the 560 pulls a lot when at 1000 core so much so that it's not that far behind the 480 in watts pulled, 1GB hurts the 560 in some game with AA/AF.

There's no way I'd want something as noisy as a 480 to start with, let alone clocking it further. Basically, if you're going to clock it then you'll be wanting an aftermarket cooler which is extra cost, hassle and potentially voids the warranty (depending on whether you can get the stock cooler off without marking it at all - not always easy).

I'm sticking with the 560Ti SOC :)

Another question because I'm getting really excited about getting this card.

What are the average overclock without extra voltage and what's the average with extra voltage?

Is the Gelid Icy Vision worth getting? :)

I've not seen that show itself as an issue on any benchmark at any resolution thus far.

Genuinelly torn here. I'd like to understand more about the noise everyone moans about. The way some go on you'd think it was like having a Tornado in your case. From what I can see it's about as loud as a 280, which I wouldnt describe as loud?!

To buy,install,play & forget, I'd go with the 560sc.

But ...... and this is where it gets a bit difficult ...... if you are happy to play and clock a bit then I'd go for the 480.

It's difficult because you may find the 480 'loud' (this should ,hopefully, not be an issue with the 560) and therefore you would have to factor in the cost of a third party cooler and you cannot be sure how well the 480 will clock. Neither of these factors would put me off .. more part of the enjoyment.

But as said many times 'each to their own'

480s can come with different default volts so overclocking can vary, I can hit 800 core on stock voltage and yes the ICY is worth getting, with that cooler you could be looking at 900 core overclock with extra volts.

i went from a GTX285 to a GTX480, both Zotac cards. idle noise there was a marginal difference, & i do mean marginal, the 480 was ever so slightly louder at idle.

under full load, it was considerabley louder than my 285, and it would ramp up far faster than the 285 as well, especially in summer. bare in mind my rig was watercooled & my fans where on a fan controller, so my gfx card stuck out like a sore thumb as a consequence. so there was no way to escape the blindingly obvious noise difference between the 2 cards.

IIRC the 285 was a 55nm chip compared to the 65nm of the 280 and should therefore be a fair bit cooler and thus quieter. My 280 sounded like a jet engine compared to the 275 that replaced it, which performed almost the same.

Haha good job. I'm actually contemplating to do the same now. I'll have to be quick though and I have my 4870 to hold on to as there are higher priced 480s coming soon too. I just hope I can get £220 for mine too if I decide to go for it.

Did you put it up for a 24 hour sale?.

Choices, choices, choices..... :D

I sold under the quick sale option and set auction time to run for 3days then the bid price for £220 and buy price for £220 and the guy did a bid buy.
I listed the card as brought from overclockers.co.uk then included the unlock information with screenshots from gpu-z showing stock vs unlock. Think thats what sold it and was my first sale to :p

I just downloaded and installed Furmark. It is running now.

My GTX280 now sounds like a hairdryer and is running at 87c. I have NEVER heard it this loud before, now I get what everyone is on about! But it isn't normally this loud when I'm gaming?

Just a question to make sure that I have understood things correctly. People have complained for quite some time now regarding the 480s being loud, power hungry and hot. But now, with this deal, it seems as if Jesus is back walking the earth.

Is this purely because of the price, or is there anything else I have missed?

depends on what games your playing and i can only guess the test put the GPU under a lot more stress than your games. you tried cleaning the fan?
