*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

If the 480 consumes an average 100 more Watts of electrcity per day it will take 20 years for the 6870 and 570 to make up the savings.

Bit confused by this statement, Power consumption already includes time; it won't be using up 100W more 'per day', it is just '100W more' fullstop. If you run it for one hour, it will use 0.1kWh extra. So for your numbers to make sense you'd have to be only using the gfx card around 1hr a day.

I'm not saying you are wrong to downplay the power consumption factor, but your numbers don't really stack up considering how long most enthusiasts have their PCs on for.

I thought that 570's, 480's and 6970's (real one's not flashed 6950's that may not hit 6970 clocks) were all pretty even in performance terms. Most benchmarks show 570's and 480's are faster below 1920x1200, 6970's are faster above 1920x1200 and at 1920x1200 they are hard to seperate.

For £195 you can get £265 worth of performance, guarenteed, out of the box, without having to flash or risking getting a card that doesn't make the grade. 480's (like 570's) will also overclock MUCH better than 6970's whch AMD have already pushed close to the limits in order to compete with Fermi.

This is a bargain.

+1 everyone needs to chill out, if noise/temps are an issue get the zalman cooler yo. i will be pre purchasing one of these over both a 560, 6950 and even top end of my budget 570, the price difference is a lot for little to no performance increase.

How many hours do you game a day because that's what counts with power usage, the 480 at idle consumes 54 watt and that's what it will be using the majority of the time.

was just checking out noise figures as a comparison to my 4890 ...

idle was something like 37 on the 480 and a bit higher on my 4890

under full load was something like 43-44dB for the 4890 and 45dB for the 480

seems very similar to me - 4890 doesn't bother me - so win :)

and idle power on the 4890 about 71W and on the 480 about 60W - so again win :)

only bothersome is much higher power draw under load on the 480 - but who cares :) I had a 3870x2 previous - that really was a power hog !

Ordered :) Can't wait to see what this beast can do! Reckon I'll probably wake up in the morning and curse all the vodka and cokes I've had tonight lol, certainly helped make my mind up that's for sure!

Tempted by this deal, though it's not really two games if the StarCraft 2 is just a trial....

Anyhow, how far do 480s generally overclock to with good cooling (water)?

How does a max overclocked 480 compare to a max overclocked 570?

SLI 480 for under £400 notes is a banging deal. Anyone care to explain how these are so cheap. I thought that they were sold at a loss, are they loosing even more?

Bottom line - this is a very good deal imo.

Why so cheap ? - My guess would be a combination of old tech. (Fair to say that it is unusual to find so little difference between old and new - partic. when you factor in the overclock the old will take), Asus wanting rid (if they do not sell soon will they end up sitting on their shelves) and the fact that Gibbo knows his stuff !!

Quality - should be good as usual 3 yr warranty.

Why is everyone around here turning in to such drama queens, as i have said before if you are that worried about the power usage of an extra few hundred watts a day then i would take a look around your home and i can guarantee of methods to save you power!

Not surprised this thread got to 6 pages so quick because there is bound to be a lot of interest and gibbo mentioned 300 units i can see them going pretty quick :p .

My PC is on from 8:AM until 10PM+ each day 6 days a week and it does make a difference over a year. Money is not the issue but why waste energy when there are other more efficient alternatives. I would like to think there is a future for my kids and it's down to the individual to play his/her part.

I'll do my bit when the governments (especially america, china and india) do theirs. There's not much point in me buying a more energy efficient graphics card and making sure my corn flakes boxes go in the brown bin when these countries are wasting tons and tons every day.

Then why aren't you running an Intel Atom and onboard GPU?

individuals can make no difference even when we are taking about millions. enjoy what you can afford at its maximum potential and dont let those ******** up there tell you otherwise.
