Edinburgh meet. Decision thread.

Cool! Can we add "Model shoot" to the plan?

Andrew

lol - if only, she is nearly as camera shy as me..

Looks like we will be flying as trains are looking like 200+,you can only book upto may 5th at the moment though, so there might be cheap tickets once the next batch is released..

My camera bag is already too heavy. Something new has to be really special to earn a place.

But, I suppose I could find a use for a 1000D. It would be nice to fit my Kite Aerial Photography rig with something that is light weight and disposable :-)

You flew a 5D on a kite?!
You FLEW a 5D up so many metres high?! Did it survive?!

Yes.

I havn't done much KAP. But the idea of shooting the castle appeals.

Hmmm... The KAP rig is likely to trigger the security theatre at the airport but maybe I could post it to someone who is taking the train...

Anyway, some KAP:

This was taken with a pocket camera:

One of our kites: Note the size of the shadow on the ground (and check the EXIF for 5D/50mm)

Aw, come now, no need to hurt my feelings.. :(

I'm just a learner, I can't afford expensive equipment!

When we did the last London meet, some kind soul arranged security clearance so that we could shoot in Canary Warf without being accused of terrorism.

Should we be doing anything similar in Edinburgh?

I'm asking for local knowledge - is there anywhere that would be cool to shoot where security would kick us out if we didn't ask first?

Gaffer - I'll send you an email reply as soon as I sort out my travel arrangements. Barely been indoors this weekend.

For those who have flown with tripods, how did you pack it - in the suitcase or as an item? My RS283 might be too long to fit in a weekend bag and need a small suitcase instead, which could prove very annoying to carry.

Anytime I've taken a tripod, its been in a bag that gets checked in, normally take the head and handles off so its as small as it can be and no parts which can poke through a plastic bag (some oily parts) and ruin your clothes.

Out of the places that i listed in the other topic I think the only one would be the parliament building for obvious reasons :D There are a few tours that go on through the building but I'm 99 percent sure that photography isn't allowed within the chambers (possibly the whole inside of the building) I think an email to them may be the best way to clarify things though.

Other than that I cant think of too many other places which are that sensitive. Perhaps if DJ_Switch sees this he could shed some light on it as he's from Edinburgh.

tripods have to be checked in but this is down to carrier restrictions.

I'll write that email.

At first glance, it looks good. Free tours. Photography explicitly prohibited when parliament is sitting (which isn't at the weekend)

Andrew

Just for your info I was part of a tour given by an MSP (not sure if that makes a difference) one evening and they seemed happy for me to photograph wherever I liked (with my DSLR), including the chamber so it's certainly not impossible. If you run into any real trouble send me a PM I'll see if I cant pull some strings ;)

Also when we came down for the London meet I did pack my small tripod into my hand luggage and there was no problem, it does fit inside a small backpack though so larger ones may need checking in as per your airlines baggage size rules.

Edit; I'll have a little shifty on other potentially restricted sites and points of interest, might even do a little recce and see who takes any interest in my activities.

The easyjet website says:

Things you can take on board in addition to your one piece of hand luggage:-
  • Walking frames or crutches

Now, I wonder if I could fit a crutch handle onto my gitzo to make an adjustable, three legged, carbon fibre sports crutch?

Andrew

I'll write that email.

They didn't take long to respond:

You are welcome to take photographs of the public areas of the building such as the Main Hall. You are also welcome to take photographs of the Debating Chamber from the public galleries when no parliamentary business is taking place. However, the public are not permitted to film or take photographs during parliamentary business or while on a guided tour of the Parliament building.

As you plan to visit on a weekend, you may also wish to note that the Scottish Parliament is closed all day on Sundays. Details of our opening hours are available to view at the following page of our website:
