I like Derek W's idea of an Edinburgh meet. But since air tickets go up in price the longer you wait, I'd like to force the issue and come to a decision sooner rather than later.

Here's the main plan:

Meet at 10am on Saturday 14th May at the square plynth behind the Royal Scottish Accademy, here:

Here is a photo of the plynth:

So... we have 6 beds in 3 rooms in the shadow of the castle. Who would like to join us?

We'll be shooting in the evening golden hour then if the night is clear, I want to capture the castle against the stars. Then we'll be up and out before dawn for the morning golden hour, so please note that ours is a peaceful resting place for photographers, not a party house!

Priority goes to:

  • People staying both Friday and Saturday.
  • Those who have already expressed a concern about cost.
  • Those who have already put their name down.

Andrew & Kathleen

Andrew, do you mind letting me know how much the rate would be, either on here on by trust emai?

There is no "rate". If you're our guest, you're our guest. End of.

There is no rota for chores but there is cooking and washing up to do.

There is no account for expenses but there are things to pay for.

It'll all work out.

For reference:

Dawn is about 5am. *yawn*
The sun goes down around 9:15pm
There should be lots of moonlight. Full moon on the following Tuesday.

Can you see Arthur's seat from the Castle? The moon will be rising behind Arthur's seat at about 4pm.

Is the castle on the horizon when viewed from Arthur's seat? The sun will be setting maybe 5 degrees to the right of the castle (over the mound, also over the Craggs) as viewed from Arthur's seat.

This is all working out very nicely.

I was looking for 10 folk and we've got 10 folk.

We have 6 beds in the apartment and 6 people that want to stay over.

We have a chinese cook

We have some cracking photographers.

Phate isn't coming :-)

The apartment is in a good location, in the shadow of the castle (literally - at about 5am by my calculation)

The apartment has wifi

Now, all we need is good weather!

You flew a 5D on a kite?!
You FLEW a 5D up so many metres high?! Did it survive?!

Yes.

I havn't done much KAP. But the idea of shooting the castle appeals.

Hmmm... The KAP rig is likely to trigger the security theatre at the airport but maybe I could post it to someone who is taking the train...

Anyway, some KAP:

This was taken with a pocket camera:

One of our kites: Note the size of the shadow on the ground (and check the EXIF for 5D/50mm)

When we did the last London meet, some kind soul arranged security clearance so that we could shoot in Canary Warf without being accused of terrorism.

Should we be doing anything similar in Edinburgh?

I'm asking for local knowledge - is there anywhere that would be cool to shoot where security would kick us out if we didn't ask first?

tripods have to be checked in but this is down to carrier restrictions.

The easyjet website says:

Things you can take on board in addition to your one piece of hand luggage:-
  • Walking frames or crutches

Now, I wonder if I could fit a crutch handle onto my gitzo to make an adjustable, three legged, carbon fibre sports crutch?

Andrew

I'll write that email.

They didn't take long to respond:

You are welcome to take photographs of the public areas of the building such as the Main Hall. You are also welcome to take photographs of the Debating Chamber from the public galleries when no parliamentary business is taking place. However, the public are not permitted to film or take photographs during parliamentary business or while on a guided tour of the Parliament building.

As you plan to visit on a weekend, you may also wish to note that the Scottish Parliament is closed all day on Sundays. Details of our opening hours are available to view at the following page of our website:

Just a small note. Once Sam lands and gets himself sorted at the airport Hell need to get the airport shuttle bus into Edinburgh which will take sound 45 mins before it stops at waverly bridge above the station.

Since we don't get there till late, It would probably be a good idea to pick a pub or similar meeting place where folk could meet up on Friday evening.

Would anyone with local knowledge care to make a suggestion?

The apartment is here:
