Hey, I currently live and work in a small seaside town in North Cornwall but it is too small and quiet for my liking (I'm from a big city).

I am looking to move to one of these cities as both are an hours commute but which one should I go for?

I've spent more time in Plymouth going to the student union and know it quite well now.

Exeter I don't know so much apart from a days shopping and I've got the bus and train to there from Glasgow before so I guess better transport links?

Although Plymouth airport has a flight straight to Glasgow and the train is decent for getting to London.

Anyone got any more info on these places to help me decide?

Exeter, as if you even had to ask. Exeter has low levels of serious crime, lots of police on foot and in cars on patrol, makes you feel very safe.

Plus, we bloody hate those Plymouth lot. Green army my arse.

Give me the choice, I'd rather be in Barnstaple, but Exeter has easy access to the M5 and the rest of the country.

Well both cities are student cities (University of Exeter - WOOO) so if you can deal with us ****ers, you're alright. I can say for sure Exeter's night life is alright as long as you don't mind being kicked out/v& by 2:30am.

Both have pretty much the same standard of night life and amenities really, we often go to Plymouth to knock about, but in all honesty there's not much that either city has over the other. Apart from Plymouth being generally smellier, what with the port. People seem much more rugged in Plymouth - probably has something to do with being down Union Street on a Friday night - have a good old scrap with the French sailors 'n that.

I'm an Exonian though and a Devon lad to boot, my heart is in the regional capital and we dun like them Plymouth ******** ;)

Why do you think that?

Because Plymouth as a city is twice the size of Exeter.

Personally I like both cities - they both have pros and cons.

Exeter is a nicer city and is a little more upmarket. But the traffic is literally horrific.

Plymouth has far better natural surroundings - it is one of the countries most beautiful natural harbours - but it's further away from civilisation. Also, in Plymouth, traffic bad enough to make the local paper is a 10 minute delay :D

Exeter. I grew up in the area so have a bias towards the city. Plus the fact that it's awesome and my old china plate Michael Caines runs a restaurant there. Plymouth is on the route to nowhere fast. jmho.

I would say they are noticeable more then Exeter, as sometimes the people of Cornwall escape for a day out.

On the assumption you already have a job and are simply after somewhere to live, Plymouth will offer lower house prices and thus lower rental rates than Exeter. There is no denying that Exeter is a more upmarket place - but there are some nice areas in Plymouth as well, and if you pick one of the nice areas you need never visit the less desireable places.

Lets also get some perspective - neither Exeter nor Plymouth are anything like the Home Counties, neither is a world away from the other..

Plymouth *is* a larger city, mind, with a population of more than twice that of Exeter. Whether thats a good or a bad thing or not is entirely up to you.

Never had so much aggro as I have on my nights in Plym. Maybe it's just the student crowd, maybe not, but I find you have to be a bit more macho there. Bare in mind my experience is mainly based around night life though - during the day it could be totally different.

Also, Michael Caines is a great place for nosh :D

I've recently moved from Bristol to Exeter and I must say I love it here. It's a beautiful city with very few (if any) "bad places".

It's a tiny city and a lot of people are more like town-folk, a lot friendlier and I get a sense of everyone taking pride in their surroundings.

I've heard of Plymouth and been a couple of times, seems dirty and old :s

It's not really any older than Exeter, infact it's newer in most places than Exeter which ironically is what gives it the appearance that its older. Allow me to explain. Exeter still retains quite a lot of nice historic architecture. Plymouth city centre on the other hand was completely flattened in World War 2 and very little of it survived bar the Barbican area. This means it was entirely rebuilt in the 1950's and the city centre therefore is 'modern' as 'modern' was in the 1950's.

It does, however, have modern buildings and a modern shopping centre just like Exeter does.

I was looking at Plymouth when I recover from my operation. The college has work down there for me and I must say i quite fancy it.

If you ignore the crap areas (of which there are many) then you'll be rewarded with quite a nice pace of life, good scenery and low housing prices.

I simply never visit the less desireable areas and as a result they never affect me.
