*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

If the stock cooler is too loud, search for this little gem - Inno3D i-Chill Hawk Graphics Card Cooler. For 20 quid it looks great!

reviews arent that good tho from what i remember?

@ Fox have you messed with the custom fan profiles? I was thinking exactly the same as you 30 mins ago. My first attempt at a profile but its working really well. im idling at 45C ish @ 30%

didnt get that bad in 3dmark and didnt go above 70C

Trouble is if I put the fan at 30% with 2 monitors plugged in the idle creeps above 70c.

Edit: Yes, I received Far Cry 2.

Yeah, my 6970 has high idle temps with 2 monitors too, as it runs at near 3dclocks all the time. Setting my monitor to 120hz makes Nvidia cards not idle properly too so I use 110hz at desktop so the cards downclock properly. Do you have a cheap video card you can chuck into a spare PCI-E slot to power the second monitor?

You don't need owt special, hell a small low profile card would do. The 570 will have high idle clocks with 2 monitors too BTW.

I don't particularly mind high idle clocks if they are not accompanied by audiable fan noise. I cant remember what my GTX280 idled at - 61c I think - but I couldnt hear it at all.

Even if the idle problem was fixed I can still hear it at 30c and it's unbearable in games so I'm fighting a losing battle here.

I think I need to just take it out whilst I decide what to do :(

Then just send it back under DSR, and get a GTX 570, problem solved.

Higher idle clocks with 2+ monitors is to stop flickering. While playing games you wont notice the sound if you have the volume at standard levels or with headphones on.

I also read as long as the card comes back in the way it was purchased than the RMA would still count? So an after market cooler will be fine?

I'm pretty certain that replacing the cooler won't void the warranty, google seems to agree with me.

Anyone know for sure? Might be worth contacting Asus to find out.

Fired mine up an hours or so ago. It's only a few degrees warmer than my 580's within my main system. There is some fan resonance at 45-50% but I can create a profile to avoid it. Overclocks to 800MHz on stock volts and 875MHz on 1.15v.

How many monitors do you have?

I don't particularly care about that specific issue - my 280 idled at 61c and it wasn't a problem. It's only the associated fan noise.

Just had a thought, Fox... could you create one profile in Afterburner with a large under-clock, and select that when you're doing 2D stuff and don't want the noise? And then create a different, overclocked profile to activate when you game?

I guess it'd be a pain to have to keep selecting to switch between profiles, but it might be easier to live with than the noise.

(I'm asking as much for myself, tbh, having one of these arriving tomorrow, and trying to think what to do after reading your issues with the noise profile of the card...)

Some of us looked into this a while back, and you will void the warranty if you make any modification to EU cards. Its different for some north American manufactures warranty's, but you cant claim a cross RMA.
