It's fine at 30% fan but then it idles at 74. Is this a concern or...?

The GTX480 was built to run at high temps so it wont affect life time that much and plus you have warranty if it ever dies.

Possible case of insta-regret here :D

Ordered a 480 earlier this evening, fancied a cheeky little performance bump from my 5870. I'll compare the two cards in my system before deciding which one to keep, if i can't handle the noise/heat of the 480 or it isn't enough of a performance bump when properly overclocked it'll go straight back under DSR.

It isn't like these are hard limits, is it.
Don't forget that most people's measurements will be taken taken from the wall. If you consider this measurement will be ~20% greater than the system really draws (typical PSU's have an 80% efficiency), the actual system Wattage will be considerably less. I very much doubt a GTX480 will pull more than 250W within anything other than Furmark. Most games will not come close to lighting up all of the transitors.

No, it is a dual monitor setup.

I'd let you know what my case temp is if I could find some software that actually worked - Speedfan doesnt.

Well the cards will run at higher clocks and voltages with two monitors when at idle, lowering fan speed to 30% won't help idles temps which in turn will heat your case up badly.

about 15% from stock increase i upgraded from 2 5850s because i had no room for PCI-E cards its either sell the cards and get a fast single or buy a new mobo. i chose a new card

I went from a 1000 core 5870 to an 850 core 480, don't regret it a bit.

What is it about an extra monitor that these cards seem to find so stressful? Heck even my Laptop can run 2 monitors

Same with AMD cards they run at higher clock speeds with two monitors.

If it comes to it, would it be feasible to run my second monitor off a separate cheap, £20ish passive gfx card? It's only for outputting to my LCD TV in the next room for watching mostly SD (and some HD) video. I'd guess if it is possible that it would solve the issue of the 480 not downclocking and having high idle temps?

Just disable your second monitor when not in use.

Well his idle temps will be higher setting a 30% fan speed with two monitors, best to leave it on default 44%, the auto fan should not kick in until temps hit 70-75c.

Just ran Heaven benchmark, peak temp 86C, peak fan speed 63% and I could certainly hear it but it doesn't bother me at all to be honest, looks like a keeper :)

Its always in use, thats why I have it.

44% fills my room with an irritating and frustrating droning noise - it is just unacceptable to me. I don't mind 44% or even 60% in games, but not at idle. And in games it gets to 80% in Crysis!

My idle temp at 44% is about 61c, the same as my 280 was.
