*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

Just disable your second monitor when not in use.

Yeah, I've thought of that, but tbh it would be about as much of a pain as the noise.

The TV is connected through the wall with an HDMI cable and is in our bedroom, and MediaPortal is set up to start by default on that display. So, with the MSE remote, I can start MP from bed, select HDMI input on the TV and watch all our stored films and series. If I had to get up, go into my office, re-enable the display, go back to bed, and then turn it on... well, it would just defeat the whole purpose of that set-up.

That's why I'm concerned about this high idle temps and high fan speeds, and why I'm desperately searching around for alternative solutions :)

Its always in use, thats why I have it.

44% fills my room with an irritating and frustrating droning noise - it is just unacceptable to me. I don't mind 44% or even 60% in games, but not at idle. And in games it gets to 80% in Crysis!

My idle temp at 44% is about 61c, the same as my 280 was.

I can only assume you have a faulty fan on the 480, 44% is quieter than most silent case fans. Monitor the fan speed with afterburner, I doubt it's actually at 44% and irritating you, if it is then it sounds faulty.

i can hear mine too, if i take the case side off and listen for it. my cosair h50 makes more noise. my front fan intakes make more noise

Pretty good price at £7. I paid about £15ish for a similar one but that was about 4years ago.

thanks both of you, OCUk should stock these, but then probably we would cheep down on PSU upgrades :P

Just ran Heaven benchmark, peak temp 86C, peak fan speed 63% and I could certainly hear it but it doesn't bother me at all to be honest, looks like a keeper :)

welcome to the happy owners club.

But I thought all GTX480 run near silently according to you ?

i dont think thats the case, its not silent, its quiet at stock and playing games its not that loud at 63% fan speed.

its been blown way out with hype like aviod like the plague, ive now gone death because of the noise of this graphics card

If it comes to it, would it be feasible to run my second monitor off a separate cheap, £20ish passive gfx card? It's only for outputting to my LCD TV in the next room for watching mostly SD (and some HD) video. I'd guess if it is possible that it would solve the issue of the 480 not downclocking and having high idle temps?

Yeah I suggested that earlier, it does solve the high idle clock problem.

The case makes a massive difference to heat levels on these card. Within my HAF-X, my 480 idles at 35degrees with 30% fan. I am sure that if I stuck it in a Shuttle it would idle at 70+.

For info, I just checked the power draw of my system. i7 950 @ 4.2GHz, 5x HDD's, GTX480.

Idle: 188W peak.
Furmark: 391W peak (jumps between 372 & 391W when rotating).
Furmark overclocked 480 @ 1.15v 875core/4400mem 434W peak (jumps between 380 & 434W when rotating).

Measurements are taken from the wall and my HX850W PSU has a max efficiency of 85%. Take ~15% off of above measurements for the true overall system component draw.

edit: Just ran Prime95 and Furmark together with the 480 and CPU overclocked and recorded 560W.

Noise is difficult to quantify, but from the people I know who have been around the cards they all considered the GTX480's to be loud cards.

Everyone is different and if you don't care about noise/power for £196 they are really fast cards. The problem is people seem to be expecting to much from the cards. I mean Nvidia dropped them for good reason after all.

I took my deliver of my card today and did some benchmark tests and seems my 6950 using the asus 6970 beats a 480 at stock speed on 1920 x 1080
Also id say the gtx 480 looks more ugly installed in a windows case because theres no blackplate and theres heatpipes on the side

My gtx 480

My old 6950 with asus 6970 bios

Max temp with auto fan on in Heaven benchmark

Geting 44c idle. On my 6950 i was geting around 42c and up to 86c on bad company with auto fan on. Also my idle power usage for my rig with my 6950 was 150 watts.
Its now 188 watts idle and jumps to 240 watts when doing desktop stuff or watching somethink.

I only sold my 6950 because i wanted to give 3d ago. If i didnt have a 3d monitor then id prob prefer my unlocked 6950 over this 480 but gonna get a custom cooler for it and overclock it abit.
But for £195 i cant complain
