*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

That's 60% fan speed on my 480....

So 44% should be 1760RPM? (Assuming perfect linearity in RPM->%)

That would mean Fox's at 32% would be equivalent to you at 44%, yet at 30% he's seeing idle temps of 70c!

Something doesn't add up there.

Either one of your cards/applications are misreporting, or there is surely something wrong with Fox's card?

still undecided now ! aaargh - mind you just watched this - 480 2nd down - seemed ok until half through video ... then got worse and worse

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/03/26/nvidia_fermi_gtx_470_480_sli_review/7

You need to keep in mind that's run in an open test bench and you will have much higher temps when the cards fitted in a case. As the system heat up the power usage will increase, and that will add more heat, but the case will give some sound deadening.

For anyone who wants it, here is a hacked "cool & quiet" ASUS GTX480 bios that I created today. It basically reduces the idle/2D volts from 0.95v to 0.7v in order to knock off a few degrees. As a treat I have also increased the max volts available within Afterburner to 1.215v.

Do At Your Own Risk

ASUS GTX480 Cool & Quiet BIOS

You need to create a bootable CD/USB drive, add the bios and latest NVFLASH, boot to the drive and enter the following DOS commands.
i) NVFLASH --SAVE ORIGINAL.ROM
saves your original bios incase you ever need to fallback.
ii) NVFLASH --PROTECTOFF
removes bios overwrite protection
iii) NVFLASH --ERASEEEPROM
clears the eeprom
iv) NVFLASH -J -4 -5 -6 ASUS480V.ROM
flashes the above cool & quiet bios.
v) NVFLASH --PROTECTON
turns bios protection on.
vi) Remove bootable CD/USB drive and Reboot

edit: If you cannot work out how to create a bootable disk and download a recent version of NVFLASH this guide is probably best avoiding.

Mine's reporting correctly.

44% is 1650 RPM.

30% 1080 RPM

Geting 44c idle. On my 6950 i was geting around 42c and up to 86c on bad company with auto fan on. Also my idle power usage for my rig with my 6950 was 150 watts.
Its now 188 watts idle and jumps to 240 watts when doing desktop stuff or watching somethink.
I only sold my 6950 because i wanted to give 3d ago. If i didnt have a 3d monitor then id prob prefer my unlocked 6950 over this 480 but gonna get a custom cooler for it and overclock it abit.
But for £195 i cant complain

you can set the volts to max on afterburner and set the core to 850 it will be fine on the stock cooler but thats about the limit i think

The case makes a massive difference to heat levels on these card. Within my HAF-X, my 480 idles at 35degrees with 30% fan. I am sure that if I stuck it in a Shuttle it would idle at 70+.

For info, I just checked the power draw of my system. i7 950 @ 4.2GHz, 5x HDD's, GTX480.

Idle: 188W peak.
Furmark: 391W peak (jumps between 372 & 391W when rotating).
Furmark overclocked 480 @ 1.15v 875core/4400mem 434W peak (jumps between 380 & 434W when rotating).

Measurements are taken from the wall and my HX850W PSU has a max efficiency of 85%. Take ~15% off of above measurements for the true overall system component draw.

edit: Just ran Prime95 and Furmark together with the 480 and CPU overclocked and recorded 560W.

Thats about what I get....

this is what i run all the time.

The loud fan noise is ridiculous - it's nothing like the 280 so I've no idea where all those graphs showing the noise as like a 280 came from. Oddly it isnt that hot at load, 79c whilst playing Crysis but with the fan set to 30 not only does it still drone but it idles at 70c.

Fan speed at a staggering 75% in Crysis compared with just 60% in the same game last night on my 280.

Really dissapointed, not sure what to do now :(

Hate to say I told you so but, after being told I was mad to choose the 560SOC over 480, I feel somewhat vindicated.

I simply can't live with noisy graphics cards - even the 280 was too much for me (although I may have had a bad one).

As for what to do, frankly I'd return the 480 and get the 470 while the offer's still on.

The same review sites had graphs showing it to be as loud as a GTX280, another card people complained was loud. I had a 280 and didn't feel the noise to be an issue. Therefore I took the information I read and thought that if it has similar noise levels to a 280 it would be considered loud but I'd be able to tolerate it.

This isn't even in the same ballpark as my 280.
Given these reviews and the fact that I found the noise from my 280 intolerable, I'm starting to wonder whether you had an exceptionally quiet 280.

if you dont want it you can just refuse the delivery off it, they need a sig off you.

it just goes back to where it comes from

or DSR OCUk are really fast at this moneys back with you in a few days

you have to be a bit careful though I think as I thought I was told somewhere (whether true or not) - that if you refuse delivery - although its sent back to sender - its not necessarily insured .... so if it goes missing its your responsibility ....

didnt think about that, amended thanks :D

just dont open it and DSR its about 5-10quid to post back 1st class royal mail and its there in 1-2 days depending what time you ordered it

edited because of spelling not sure why i still FAIL at english :(

^^ I'm not 100% sure on the insurance thing - but its worth considering and sort of would make sense as you're not paying for the service so to speak

The courier is responsible for the package until it is delivered and signed for. The courier's contract is with the sender so if it goes missing it is down to OcUK and said courier to resolve. If delivery is not accepted, you are not responsible for the loss. Liability is only handed over to you once you sign for it.

30% 1080 RPM

SO that would make 100% on yours no more than 3500rpm? Mine does 5070rpm at 100%!

It is currently set at 61% where it is reporting 3240rpm.

At 44% it reports 2200rpm.

At 30% it reports 1530rpm.

Why do they differ?

Quite. In my defence though I viewed many graphs comparing it to the 280 and made my decision based on that.

The 470 doesnt offer the performance.

Perhaps I did (or do!). I never had any issues with the noise level of that card.

right after reading this thread practicaly all night - decided finally - to order (just about to do it) the FOZR 470 - if I can get it to near 480 performance and it still be relatively quiet - then jobs a good un IMO
