*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

It appears I have missed the GTX 470 deals, is this worth the extra pennies over that?? I am new to PC gaming so have no idea what to expect with regards to benchmarks and FPS etc

Sorry for n00bish question

If you can accept the fact these types of cards will make a bit of noise like any other high powered card, then yes its well worth the extra.

well - I just hit 'go' on the order for delivery tomorrow. Hope that the thing is not too loud - but sitting here listening to the my Dyson 4870 (tm) I can't imagine it will be.

Looking forward to playing with it tomorrow...

Dyson 4870? You are in for a bad shock, the 480 is louder at stock idle than the 4870 is playing games :p

Funny thing is that in the 3d profile thing it says it works excellent or something... 3d at 10 fps must be awesome :p

should have got a 5870

Im gonna try some older drivers later on, and see if it sorts anarchy out, for now though its bc2 :)

Edit: Yes mate its the latest drivers that make anarchy online run at single figure fps on a gtx480, I have just downgraded to 260.99 drivers and anarchy online is fine now 60fps usually

I had a 4870, and a 4870x2.

The 4870x2 was mental, and the 4870 was maybe a touch quieter than this 480 when overclocked.

Dunno what 4870 you've got, but to run at 70% fan and not hear it must be a good one. Ati's fans usually whine like hell at that speed.

My 6970's does at 70% I can't stand it, but luckily auto fan only gets up to around 48%, which is audible but ok.

What % is the 480 running at idle, because at idle it should be 44% which is silent.

44% is not silent at all. Infact it's very audiable indeed - 30% could be considered by some to be 'silent' but 44% most certainly is not. We've already established it seems what your card thinks is 44% is rather different to everyone elses.

Apparently the Asus being sold runs at 2400 RPM at 44% fan, mine runs at 1600 RPM, how about you? for me 1600 RPM is silent.

See above.

I was considering getting one of these Asus GTX480 to replace A GTX 460 in my folding Rig(GTX480 and 2x GTX 460 1GB). Glad the price has now gone up as its taken the temptation away :).

Just to bring temptation back are you planning on relisting the B grade GTX480's cards that where taken down earlier in the week while this offer was on?

I guess some 480s have a different fan profiles in the bios for whatever reason, maybe just the later cards. And yeah 60% fan on mine is 2400 RPM and of course that is far too loud for idle.

You can't really connect any of the plugs into the wrong place unless you use a hammer to force them in. They have added notches, odd shaped heads etc to ensure that each type of plug only goes into specific places. No need to worry about it so much.

Since this is your first PSU transplant, I would right down the number of things currently plugged into the old psu, preferably along with the type of plug each device etc it's plugged into.

Then check that list as you connect the new PSU up one plug at a time. Make sure you've connect up at least as many plugs on the new PSU as you unplugged from the old one. That way you can't miss any. The final count will be 2 units higher since the 480 takes up one 6 and one 8pin PCIe power.

As for the location of the graphics cards, if your motherboard as two full 16x lanes (which you probably don't know) then it won't matter which way round it goes. However, in the more likely event that your motherboard has a 16x primary and an 8x or 4x secondary slot then you definitely want to move the 9500 down. Do you know the make and model of your motherboard? If not it doesn't really matter, just put the 480 into where the 9500 is now and you won't have to worry about it :)

Good idea about the PSU, just confused about why some black connectors are plugged into white ones.

Its a Asus P5NE-SLI.
On reviews it only says it has 1 16x and it goes into 8x when you use two graphics cards i think so will probably try moving it down.

Mine runs cool and quiet with the modded 0.7v idle bios and following fan profile. The fan can only be heard when gaming, and by then I am too immersed to notice it.
