Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

You basically have 1 role which you can combine 3 souls within a class (warrior, cleric, mage, rogue) to create your own playstyle. You can purchase more roles and gain other souls later so you could have 4 roles (not sure if its 4, but it's more than 3)which you can switch anytime.

For example, as cleric, you could have 1 role using the shaman/justicar/warden to make a melee cleric but if you get bored of that, you can switch to another role anytime and use cabalist/sentinel/purifier to be a healing bot. You can do this while out fighting in dungeons. Having problems keeping people healed as melee cleric? Switch your role in the dungeon to a pure healing spec and there you go. Couldn't be easier.

I don't remember what the limits are but it takes 2 secs to change your role.

Play whatever you like. That's why Rift has the potential to be great.

You can only mix's sole of your archetype.

ie. Warrior can have one role that Paladin/Reaver/Champion and be a pure tank then switch to Beastmaster/Warlord/something else for DPS and have another role for PvP etc. You can't however mix in soles from over archetypes.

in the retail copy of this game will there be a user guide explaining all of these things?

very handy tool for plaiyng around with the 'souls' and testing your build.

I had a lot of fun with Ranger(pet) - Marksman(DPS) - Bard(buffage) ; the marksman and ranger builds look quite similar but with the ranger you get a pet that can hold aggro as you pewpew, your marksman is great for fast DPS and PvP then the Bard can quickly heal you(Pet & Group members) for all the dmg you dish out.

Once you pick your third soul thats basically your build for the game, although you can reset points whenever you want you cant change the soul types(there is a quest that allows you to swap one soul). You can also buy for a few gold handy 'ability' switch thingy (cant recall name) that allows you to store a second build and swap to it anywhere at anytime.

today I'm rolling a rogue build with Sin-Saboteur-Nightblade(or Riftstalker) .. cant wait !

Ah, that's much clearer. Half of what I was reading gave the impression you could swap out archetypes on demand, which sounded like more trouble than it was worth :)

as you assign points to a skill tree, I think every 2 points open a new skill which you get a proper description in the 'Abilities granted by this Build' list. The interesting part is buffing your skills to suit your style ie you might want to extend your attacks reach or add more crit %

the only limit on skills is via the level cap of the beta, you will always get the corresponding skill as along as you put enough points into that tree, if that makes sense !.

cool. can a mage use a sword and a shield to do mele attacks or am i stuck using a ****ing staff which is pretty useless for mele attacks?

im not expecting my melee's with a sword to be as effective as a warrior but enough to do some decent damage if im low on that blue status bar thingy that goes down everytime u ast a spell/skill

(You can tell im a noob lol)

sadly your mage is no Gandalf sword and staff wielder!!

the Mage is fun though, take the Pyromancer then add a soul from Necromancer or Elementalist and you can summon a melee pet to assist you..

I thought we already had a guild forum? Why do we need another one? Its not a good idea to have multiple communities. Best to stick to one place and focus all guild discussion and organisation there.

we do, this is just a steam group so we can see who is online and chat etc

Does anyone know if there is a way to download the client without using the installer? Reason i ask is because i'd like to be able to download it at work as my broadband connection at home isn't so great.
