*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

I decided to not go for either this or 470 - awaiting next bargain :)

desperately wanted the 480 but decided 40% idle fan would really bug me - or "may" have bugged me - but wasn't prepared for risk - hopefully in a few months the 570 will be down 30 quid or so in price and won't be much more expensive than this 480 was

Im gonna try some older drivers later on, and see if it sorts anarchy out, for now though its bc2 :)

Edit: Yes mate its the latest drivers that make anarchy online run at single figure fps on a gtx480, I have just downgraded to 260.99 drivers and anarchy online is fine now 60fps usually

ok awesome! was about to try the ones on the disc which are 258.96. Will let you know how I get on.

After a minor nightmare from DPD showing they'd delivered it when they hadn't I'm all up and running, nice card, Metro 2033 really likes it and I haven't noticed it being any louder than the 4870 that it's replaced. Time for more testing...

You could've set idle fan to 30% easy, on a single monitor it makes no difference.

Just put mine in and run a few games to see what was what. Great performance, streets ahed of my gtx 275 :D , at idle it louder than the 275 but not by much and not to a level that bothers me, more importantly the fan speed didnt increase much during game play, and temps hit 75 tops, so all in all pretty chuffed with it. Its running in an Antec 1200 case btw, which needs a clean ;)

Just been playing with Heaven benchmark - the 280's fan was, running this, as loud as the default idle fan on the 480. The 280 never went above 54% fan.

It's still hot - it idles at 65c and loads at 87c - but it isnt as noisy as the 480 at all, there is a clear difference.

Did you by any chance note the 480's bios version? there's seems to be quite a varaition in default fan speeds

Mine at idle, 44% fan speed 1950rpm, GPU temp 36C

GPUZ ver 0.5.1
ASUS bios ver 70.00.35.00.00
Nvidia driver 266.58

I wish that was true :(

I've put my 280 back in. There is definately a difference.

I just put mine in.

Major hassle with BSOD's . Did a wipe of all traces of Nvidia and installed the drivers in safe mode. Gave me a scare. All good so far.

There is definitely an increase in sound from my GTX 285 at idle. I would say maybe 10%-15% louder.

Does it bother me so far? Not really as i always have the TV on, music or games.

If i have to study in silence then i use my laptop.

Ran Vantage, 3dmark 11 and heaven and all went well.

Idling at 36 degress
Fan speed = 30%@ 1525rpm

My 44% fan speed is 1950RPM as well. It's.... audible. Not really loud, but different in tone to my case fans, I think.

My case fans I've always thought were quite quiet (though I guess other people might think they're too noisy), but they give a gentle swooshing sound. No buzzing, vibrating, motor noise or anything, just the "whoosh" of air moving. It's perfectly okay.

Now, I don't actually think the 480 at 1950RPM is louder, but the fan does have a slight-but-definite buzz to it that means I notice it's there compared to my 460, which was completely inaudible over my case fans.

It's nowhere near as loud as I was fearing, though. When my HDDs are accessed they are still the loudest thing in my system by a distance.

With two monitors, it seems to have stabilised on auto fan profile at 64C and 44% (1950RPM). This is... okay. I can live with this. Would like to overclock, but we'll see.

Thing is... I have yet to try any benches or games... :/

I am used to noise when gaming due to my Sharkoon SE CPU fan spinning up to 2000RPM, but I have headphones and I know that's a noise level my wife can live with too (bar the very occasional complaint).

So... onto gaming, but I'm feeling really relieved that all is bearable at idle, as that was always going to be the main issue. :)

Same here. I'm waiting to see what the incoming 1Gb versions of the 6950 and 6970, and their lower than 2Gb price points, do and if it causes Nvidia to shake up their pricing (probably not on the 5xx range).
