£7000 Hatchback ?

Exactly.

8000 Miles @ 30MPG = 266 Gallons of fuel. 129.9p/l = £5.90/Gallon. So 8000 Miles = £1570.
8000 Miles @ 45MPG = 177 Gallons of fuel. 133.9p/l = £6.08/Gallon. So 8000 Miles = £1076.

Is it REALLY worth owning a clattery 4-pot diesel, just for a potential saving of £41 a month? (And that's being pessimistic with the MPG from the petrol car).

Ah I see, so what you're saying is that for a 50% increase in fuel costs, you can have a petrol engine in a not very exciting car that you don't spend much time in (if you're doing 8k miles)?

My wife had an 08 Ibiza 1.9 TDI DAB Edition. She had it from a Seat dealer when it was 8 months old and only kept it 11 months, and only lost £500 on it in depreciation. Going for the 1.9 TDI and a good spec seems to be good for residuals and will still keep you in good economy and you'll have a bit of poke.

Well it would depend on a lot of other factors as well. Like whether you do lots of small journeys or long motorway slogs.

Update

I ended up buying a '07 Fiesta ST. Not quite the car I was originally looking at :D

This sure does go! Really pleased with it!
