Kwik Fit MOT's

One of the straightest MOT's you will get done, a bit too straight as Jez mentioned.

But see all those urban legends about they failed for this and they failed for that just to get me to buy an exhaust and shock absorber, its not happening, or if it is its on a very rare and local level, ie a particular manager.

No one ****s up a multi million pound business chasing 100 quid here and 100 quid there.

If your cars ok use them, if its a bit borderline go somewhere you know and might give you a pass.

Do you have any factual argument to back that rather outrageous statement up? The nationwide half price MOT offer is like the DFS half price sale. Its been around for years and is simply their normal price.

The quality of the MOT is fine, it is carried our honestly and professionally in my fairly significant experience.

Yes because its happened to me, went to Nationwide Autocentres, payed for a half price MOT, got stung with a £250 repair bill. I said sod that, had it checked out by two well known mechanics that I know in my street, they said apart from a small headlight issue, it shouldnt have failed on what it failed on at Nationwide. Sorted the headlight issue out, and it went through with an advisory of a "near worn tyre" at a local garage.

Also happened to a friend when having a £35 MOT at Kwik Fit.

Maybe its just the area I live in though

Yeah, perhaps. Bad luck there. :(

Kwikfit have been trying for years. One of their (no doubt highly professional and skilled) fitters killed an 8 year old a few weeks ago whilst joyriding a customers Porsche.

These are isolated cases, if you employ as many people as they do, see if you dont get some idiots.

Anyway im not suggesting that they are a good place to have work done, i wouldnt let them check my air pressure, but i would have no problem letting them do an MOT on a car with nothing wrong with it.

I see your point here Mark, but equally, I think this is where a lot of Krap fit places try to screw you *in my not quite so great experience, I grant you!

Take my e39 for example. I know its a good one, I know theres sod all up with it at the mo ,but, in my experience, Krap fit monkeys will look at it, see a 14 year old 200k++ 5 series and rub their hands together!

Sure, we have good & bad & sure I appreciate in such a large chain you can't avoid this.

I'd love to test this properly, i.e. take it to them after its next MOT (as in straight after I have a pass..) and see what they come up with.....

I would sincerely hope I was proved wrong. Alas, I somehow doubt it.

I guess in these days of computerised MOT's they'd spot that it had just been MOT'd anyway, smell a rat & spoil my detective work. :(

Not necessarily. I took my SLK to them for the service and was told afterwards it passed with flying colours. I also needed some work done with them at a later date and knocked them down in price from their original quote. Of course, I would never let my gf take her car there - I have no doubt they would "find" all kinds of things wrong with it.

I have no doubt that with such a bug chain, the experience will differ from garage to garage and person to person.

Nationwide Autocentres have been very good for me using their half price MOTs, I've probably had 10 MOTs done there in the last couple of years and never had any problems.

In fact when I've had minor issues with the VX they have tried to solve them for free and they've treated the Golf pretty fairly considering what a state it looks. The repair quotes there have also been pretty reasonable.

I've only ever used Kwik Fit for wheel balancing but they have always been very helpful and have even done bits for free.

Coincidental thread on PH... (albeit a dealer in this case)

Your right, that looks like another case.

Sadly the other 7 million satisfied customers they have every year dont bother to post on forums, so i cant quote them.

Here is a little nugget iv picked up over the years, a business that is more bad than good wont last, let alone grow to the size of Kwik Fit.

Thats so true.

And something I often point out to the many "Stobart bashers" that I encounter, same principle. :)

Note that I think a lot of Krap fit places can be iffy, not by any stretch though, the majority.

How many customers know whether they have had work carried out that wasn't necessary or had poor workmanship that they didn't notice?

A good number probably, put that is not the over all company policy.

Look im obviously not making myself very clear here, i think the Kwik fit standard of work is dire, they cant balance a wheel they cant do much right in my book but then im super fussy.

All im saying in this thread is i have in my experience, never had a problem with a Kwik Fit MOT, nor do i know anyone else that has.

And further to that i dont believe that as a company they go out of their way to tell customers lies come MOT time. The odd branch might but not as a whole.

Do they tell Mrs Smith her car needs a whole exhaust not a back box, possibly, or Chav Micky he needs performance tyres on his Corsa, maybe, but on an MOT with all the stringent regulations involved, no i dont believe they would risk losing that license to shaft you for another 100 quid of work.

You pinpoint my fear.

My e39 still (!) has its factory exhaust system on it, looking at it from underneath, its clear its never been off the car..... Do they tell me its old & knackered? possibly....

(Incidentally its fine, had it checked after replacing my coil packs recently as I'd read I could have damaged my cats)

Will they look at the OEM Suspension & possibly assume they are the factory parts rather than the 3rd time replaced components they actually are...?

Its that possibility that keeps me from taking it to them or any other style place for an MOT.

Obviously its your choice.

But it dosent matter what they think about what part of your car, they are there to MOT it, and for the life of me i cant see the value in them telling you a pack of lies, you leaving and heading straight to whoever it is you complain to about crooked MOT testers.

Oh sure & I excersise that choice by going elsewhere & probably paying a bit more.

With me, whilst I accept your point re the MOT, I've had a few bad experiences with them over the years & I'm wary now to say the least.

Bad experience with work done or MOT's?

Both! Although as I say, a few years back.

Failed an XR3i I owned on 6 points yet it passed - without any rectification - at an "MOT only" centre!

I also had an oil change done by them,a fair few years after the XR3 incident, they did not put the filter back on right, or perhaps use the right one - it came off & my engine died an oily death... :(

So, no. I'm Not the greatest fan of them, or perhaps I'm merely enduring karma from a previous life?:o :D

I have probably not used them (Kwik Fit) for anything other than tyre related work, in 10 years.

Oh well theres no arguing with that matey :)

Iv never had a problem with MOTs with them and iv had a lot of cars done at various branches, sod letting them do anything else though.
