dog bite...

The owner should have the dog under control, every command the dog owner makes [heal, firm no etc.] the dog should oblige and stand down as well as tell the dog off if they mis-behave, obviously the dog hasn't be trained well enough, therefore, i would consult legal action or at least send the owner to training classes.

Biting people on his own property is different to biting people in the street. Some dogs are very very teratorial.

Territorial or not, my three German Shepherds stop barking and stop becoming hostile with a firm command and just end up watching the postman or whoever is at the door making sure nothing goes wrong. Now, my previous GSD who died last year, she was properly aggressive towards strangers at the door, but she wouldn't bite them, she would sniff them and nudge them with her nose and go around them in circles if she had the chance, but never would she bite, i imagine she would if they did something sudden like harming myself.

Do you WANT something to be done?

If so make a formal complaint, it's entirely up to you.

Personally if a "pet" dog bit me to the extent that the wound bled "a lot", I would be doing my best to have the owner punished.

what did the owner do?

at the owners home I'd not take it further, its only a bite it will heal, unless you are loosing money because of it whats the point in getting the animal killed?

in the park you need to complain or it could happen to someone else... that would be my personal concern

And?

if it was a whippet I wouldn't be bothered, a muscle dog yeah get a claim in. You do realise the dog may be destroyed?

What happends next time a child goes in the garden trying to get a lost ball or toy ect?
Having been savaged by an english sheep dog myself I know how it feels, luckly I used a large handy brick to pummel the dogs head and it lost.

Child should not go into garden then, without owners permission.
just in case a dog attacks, to defend its territory.

OP

Dont deliver paper to the house, if the dog is outside.

the dog was inside and got out and caught him as he tried to run....

in the dog runs out of control from the house and attacks anyone it's dangerous and should be destroyed.

you cannot override instinct, in your house you are obviously boss the animals will follow your cue...

but I can imagine situations where that could change in a second, open the door to posty, maybe its a different guy maybe he goes to hand you something and you for some reason step back, or cough... maybe a young kid is in hte house with you and steps out towards posty... and the animal sees there is a threat and attacks...

the above happened to my GF and her dog attacked posty... insurance / police said it was natural in the situation posty got payout dog tasted human flesh and lived... (3yr old answered door to new posty dog attacked)

It's not a question of money, the dog is clearly unsuited to being a pet and should be fed to the lions . . .or Christians . . . or something.

That'll also help to keep the pavements / verges cleaner - RESULT!

for whatever reason (whether that be the owners neglect or the way it was brought up) that dog is dangerous. there's no excuse for getting bitten like that.

the cop explained that that sort of dog isn't really social, and will only really be loyal to one person.

This is complete ********, yes I agree that dogs will be loyal to the "Alpha" but they should also know there place. This bloke obviously lets his dog do whatever the hell it wants, or just can't control him, in which case he shouldn't be in ownership of the animal.

I've known plenty of people with greyhounds, whippets, lurchers, all of which have been very gentle loving animals, if a little hyperactive, but that's there genetic makeup.

At the very least, this old bloke should keep a muzzle on his dog if he can't control it.

I've been attacked by dogs in the park when I've been out running or cycling. Generally it's because the owners can't control them and for me it's always been smaller dogs. Last time it happened when I was running the woman thought it was all cute and funny, the jogger being attacked, ho ho ho, but I was about to get my leg bitten and took a very big swinging kick at the dog as it went for me. She didn't think it was quite so funny at that point and luckily for the dog it got scared and ran off before I got it.

I don't condone harming animals, but at the end of the day if it's you or them, you come first.

how dare you be allowed to let a dog bite you..it could have broken a tooth!

is what I expected to see after the loonies had finished with the 'so I ran over a dog' thread in motors

generally intruders are intruding when they're inside the house though? and people outside the house are not, in fact, intruding?

anyone who trains a dog in this country to think a person who is just on their front path or driveway or comparable area is a hostile intruder needs to realise that they're training their dog to be destroyed.

So you would be happy about Joe bloggs walking through your back garden? Afterall, they're not intruding right?

In this instance the dog owner should be held fully responsible for not keeping his dog under control, especially given it's history but to hold the dog responsible? I wouldn't agree with that as it's just doing what it thinks it's master would want it to do.

I get plenty dog attacks myself, I'm a UPS man. Thankfully none have been too bad but then I am good with dogs to start off with. It's the ones behind the letterbox that are the worst, the quiet ones... they sit there waiting for your hand to come through with the info-note :D (our most common lost-time injury apparently)
I don't expect them all to be destroyed though, I often deliver to a bloke and his collie comes to the door and is friendly but as soon as I turn around to leave he bites my ankles. (the dog not the bloke) It's not savage or anything, just a bit of nipping.
Some people read too much Daily Mail and think OMGz dog attack!!1 kill it!!
You can tell bad dog owners, they leave them outside in the cold barking all night and don't let them interact with the family, or when they do it's just to torment them, like swinging a staffy round by its teeth gripping a rubber ring or brush head.
It's chavs like these who are most likely to have their dogs savage a child.

Have you ever thought maybe this old bloke is alone and that whippet is his only companion? maybe he gets gangs of teenagers being rowdy around his house at night/weekends and that's all the dog sees is it's owner being tormented by spotty teens in black tracksuits peeing on his rose bushes and throwing empty cans of carling in his garden.
