Buying a car with no tax.

Fox, car is already £350. So not really much bargaining room, and should provide some bargain motoring.
Waiting for his reply to the add for more details, so all this could be for nothing.
Then theres the problem of getting to view the car!

I've taxed cars with a printed off certificate a few times - in fact Swiftcover don't even send you a hard copy, you are expected to print it yourself.

That depends if you come across an up to date hip post office worker, or an old battleaxe still stuck in the dark ages.

How would they tell the difference though? It's not like many people have a dot matrix printer these days. ;)

The post office demand you have a proper certificate, also it can take a day or two to show up properly on the insurance database.

My first insurance company emailed the certificates out as .doc files and you had to print them yourself, never had any trouble with the post office, in fact when I got my last car I needed to tax it and the insurance docs (new company) hadn't arrived so I pulled up one of the old .doc files then changed the dates and reg and printed it out, PO didn't look twice at it lol.

Yep depends on the post office obbiously, I've had trouble before with a printed one thats all.

Just thought I would update, guy never replied to email first time round and the add has been re-posted.
Still damn tempted, but it's still the old problem of getting to the car and insuring/taxing the same day....unless they'd accept the insurance document on my phone!....
I also have an other pug driver willing to drive and check it out with me.
But...gah....something is holding me back actually phoning up, unless it my dislike of calling strangers.

**SOME** but not all temp covers allow you to tax the car. Some specifically say that they do not allow it though. These are printed.

To be honest, last car I picked up was untaxed, I drove over 100 miles back, drove past(?) an ANPR van and at least 5 motorbike cops, and wasn't pulled. Worst that can happen is a fine IIRC? ;)

I don't understand why some people on ebay cash in the remaining tax before listing their cars. It just makes about 95% of buyers look for something else, with tax, that can be driven away instead of messing about.

I have bought cars without tax before (and knocked a few quid off because of it) and it can be a pain having to find the local post office and get everything sorted before driving it back.

Considering its only got 4 months MOT left, id suggest asking the bloke to get a fresh MOT done before you buy it, make it a condition of you buying the car and offer to add the cost of the MOT to the total

With a car of that age, he could well be looking to shift it before the MOT because he knows it will not pass

edit: sorry people, have no idea how i ended up in such an old thread.. i dont venture more than 2 pages into the forum... unintentional necrobump
