Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

The latest firmware - JS5 is it? Anyone using it? I'm on JPY and very happy, it's stable, great battery life but it could be a tad snappier (now I'm used to it!) and I fancy a change.

I would go to Darky's but there's just too many possible little niggles that I can't be bothered to work out and I know it won't be as stable.

Just wondering if anywhere here has tried the Cyanogenmod 7 Android 2.3 biuld?? That thread is a bit too daunting to get involved in!!

Quite tempted to make a backup of my current setup in CWM Recovery and then try it out. Will the restore from CWM recovery take my phone to it's current proper state though?

Cheers,

Mal

I'm on JS3 and it is "a lot" better than JPY.

I haven't tried JS5 as people have said it isn't any better than JS3.

I just now starting installing CM7 right now im updating to the latest build, had to install 20110211 build first and that was already working just fine. In my 5 mins testing found it to be really nice, was super smooth. Ill report back after I install all my apps again and see how it works after a days useages.

No niggles here

All right, I respect your opinion so I've put darky's on now and it's going well so far. Just need to monitor battery life.

I've put 9.2 on so it's not that different to JPY, but moving to 9.3 should be easy when it's released.

Well Ive finished updating to the latest build and resorted all my apps and everything, and I have to say its very fast. Also i love just how much you can customize it, it gives you soo many options and how you want everything to lookunder CyanogenMod settings. Only thing i really miss is the phone book find the stock one a bit boring and couldnt get my facebook sync to work properly xD. So far only thing that doesnt work is the camera which is an improtant thing but I can live without it for a few days I guess. Overall once its finished I have no doubt it well be by far the best rom out on the SGS and it just takes it to a whole new level.

How does it handle the internal and external sd? Do they work OK? For the contacts can't you just push the Samsung contacts.APK to the device?

Thanks

The last time I charged my phone was thursday night and it's still on 69%.
I haven't done a lot with it though - about 3 texts, 10 minutes browsing and 15 mins driving with Co-Pilot on.

IT handles both but the external sd has changed location so like some apps cant find it for example mybackup pro couldnt find it, and you cant see the external on your PC.

Havnt tired to push it but I thought I would need like the samsung drivers or something along those lines xD. Dont really wanna mess anything up yet.

Hi mate,

Now the camera is working I think I'm going to put it on and see what it is like.

Couple of questions:

Coming from the latest DocRom, do I need to disable the lagfix first?

Step 7: "Flash "speedmod-kernel-k12n-500hz.tar" osing odin"
Is that as PDA?

Thanks,

Mal

Just updated a few mins ago and yea camera is work fine. I would recommend removing lag fix just to be on the safe side though I think it would make little difference. And yes flash the speedmod like normal on odin using the pda. steps are not to hard to follow was really scared at first as I thought it would be really difficult but turned out alright.

I've had this phone a couple of weeks but have only really started using it the last couple of days, as I had to wait for number to be ported over.
I knew the S2 was going to be announced days later but due to previous phone failing, I needed something ASAP.

I like the feel of the phone and it still has some impressive hardware specs, but... I didn't realise the issues people were having with a laggy response time was as serious as it was. This phone (on the 2.2 update from Samsung Kies) is a piece of ****.
It'll teach me to just go by other opinions and positive reviews I guess. :( The Samsung bloat that's installed is my main concern. I don't want all this crap installed, but can't uninstall!?
Every cloud though... Just means I'll have to read the billions of posts to get this rooted and flashed to a standard "no Samsung rubbish" Android rom. :) Really hoping that Samsung pull the finger out an get a 2.3 update out soon to help out the development community.

I'm pretty sure that once I've got all the fixes applied that this phone will be amazing, but as standard, this thing is a disgrace.

From the looks of it, that'll sort the slowdown.
There are so many people happy with the phone after putting on a custom rom, it just amazes me how Samsung can put this out as it is.

All I ask for is a basic Android install, looking like Android should. With no Samsung applications squatting on the phone, ruining the experience. (Should probably have just taken the large cash hit and got the Nexus S)
There are an insane amount of custom roms out there though!

The pre installed apps aren't really the problem. It's more so the file system used and lack of other kernel tweaks/optimisations etc
Also, did you factory reset after kies update to 2.2? That could help

Emlyn

Is the phone on 2.2 or 2.2.1, the latter is much better and faster than 2.2, I run 2.2.1 with no lag fix and find it as good as 2.1 with a lagfix... you still get the odd app that will lag a little, but far less noticable than it was on 2.1 and from the reports of others on XDA better than 2.2.

As for the Samsung software, it can be removed, But you need to be rooted!

Hmm, it's on 2.2, first thing I did upon receipt of the phone was update, then reset as advised. :)
This was only a couple of Saturday's ago that the update took place, maybe a new update has been released since then. (3 branded)

I was maybe just expecting too much from this as standard. Navigation wise, It's not actually that much better than the G1 on custom firmware... :| (Obviously it's a lot faster when you're in the apps though.)

Like I say, the silver lining with this is that I'm pretty much forced to root the phone. I'd only put it off if it actually worked well. :)
