*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

Really? Ive had the same PSU for years (around 5 I think) and its never broken anything. It cost me £85 at the time I think so thought it was a good PSU

Think i remember reading this review about it "This PSU isn't all just good looks, its performance is also solid. Voltages were all within spec, though a little high under a light load. Efficiency was about typical for any high-end power supply"

http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/cases/Hiper_TypeR_580W_1.html

What PSU would you recommend for this type of graphics card? Although I dont really fancy spending another £100 on a PSU but suppose I will have to if mine would blow it up! What is the manufacturer minimum and recommended PSU for the GTX480?

Thanks

I had one that went pop :p

At release they were generally regarded as a quality product and very good value, however reports came in of them dying, but more shockingly, taking components with them :(

The fact that yours has lasted 5 years doesn't really mean much. It indicates that it's a strong unit in that it's lasted that long, but it is also now 5 years old... you don't really know how near to the end of its life it is.

I'd go with a quality brand, such as Corsair, Seasonic, Antec or OCZ. The minimum requirement for the GTX 480 is stated as 600W, but with a decent unit you should be able to get away with anything as low as 520W, providing you haven't got an absolute beast of a system.

I wouldn't view it as a cost incurred due to upgrading to the GTX 480, see it as an investment in the rest of your system! Even if you weren't upgrading I'd say it's worth replacing the Hiper :)

I'm not knowledgeable enough to recommend a specific model at the moment, maybe make a post over in the General Hardware section and see what the boffins come up with :D?

Just ordered one of these to replace my dual card setup at the minute. Seems I did so at the right time as these are due to go back up.

Just got my RMA replacement from overclockers, runs rift on high with supersampling.. looks super sexy.. going to test it with Farcry in a bit... will be looking to overclock it and on load the fan speed is not even that loud tbh

Worth going for one of these as an upgrade from 5770 Crossfire?

I nearly ordered the other day at £199.99 (the second time they went down to that price!) but.. I didn't :o

I see they're back at around £210 now.

Wish I'd got one now. Other than FarCry2, what game comes free with it? Are they likely to be on offer any time soon as I'm buying a new system next month!

Don't mind paying £210ish for one anyway. Read plenty reviews and if I'm only buying a single card this seems to be the best card for the money I'm spending.

FarCry2 is a great game anyway probably worth around £30. Actual bargain!

Personally I'd prefer a 6950 flashed to 6970 + overclocked, but that's my personal preference. And farcry 2 is only £5 now I think, but still can't complain, it's free.

Both very similar cards, some better in different areas, only beef I have is the power consumption and apparent heat/noise. But if you don't mind that then go for it.

Odd, I saw it in GAME the other day in Manchester at more than £5! Have it on my HDD somewhere from when I got it on Steam . Speaking of which it's still £10 to download there.

Quick question, if you did flash a 6950 and overclock it how does that affect the warranty? And does such a process ourank it hugely over a gtx480?

It does void the warranty, but it's easy enough to flash back, your manufacturer will never know. Flashing a 6950 will put it on par with a full blown 6970, further overclocking will have an average 20% performance boost (same as an overclocked 6970). After doing this it's very similar in performance to an overclocked 480... It's all down to personal preference.

Thanks for that. I'm an intelligent guy but have never really been muse of a hardware geek - more a programmer/gamer/designer! So as far as overlocking etc goes I have no experience and it would be a complete learning curve! So perhaps I'm sticking with a stock speed 480. I have a few weeks left to make up my mind anyway.

Just read over these forums, it's easy enough to get the gist of how to do things. Programs like MSI afterburner and ATI catalyst control centre will help you further tweak your card.

How to flash a 6950 if you ever get one.

Been running 2 of these cards for the past couple of weeks, and they're performing admirably. A large jump from my 460 SLIs.

They're definitely louder, but not massively so. Even with the reduced airflow from the cards being so close to each other, the top card never reaches > 95C. That said, I definitely think watercooling my rig is the way to go. Any tips for cooling 2 480s and an i7 930 @ 4Ghz (currently using an H50)?

Anyon had any issues with these such as RMA'ing them? Because theres a thread about warranties and sending back GPUs and Asus didn't fare too well there.
