listerine mouthwash.

I've read the alcohol could make bad breath worse because it dries out the mouth. My hygienist said my teeth looked cleaner after I started using that oil in water one but it costs too much. I just use an alcohol free 'basic' type and only during the day if my mouth feels 'yuk' but I don't want to brush again.

Used this first, didn't feel like it actually did anything to help, started using corsodyl and that stuff works wonders!

What would people recommend if the above two are problematic?

Is mouthwash actually needed? I have used different ones and currently on Listerine, seeing the comments it looks like I will not be using it again. - So should I switch, or give up mouthwash all together, is brushing not good enough?

I was told to stop using Corsodyl unless you're specifically told to use it. Corsodyl's not bad but has the nasty side effect of staining your teeth over time.

If you have to use mouthwash, use Colgate Fluoriguard which has no alcohol.

No. It's a big, fat marketing myth that doesn't apply unless you specifically have mouth problems. The best thing to do is just not rinse the toothpaste out of your mouth after brushing.

Ah ok, is there alcohol in corsodyl? Also is it a yellow/smoker style staining it gives?

I don't generally use it every day, more like once a week if i've eaten lots of acidic or sugary foods one day.

Yeah, my dentist said this the last time I went. He told me not to bother with mouthwash at all.

Yeah it's only really needed after dental surgery or denture/bridge etc irritation. My dentist recommended Corsodyl for a week or so after I had my wisdom teeth out but like others have said it may stain your teeth.

BTW Listerine was originally marketed as drain cleaner/Dettol type stuff. It's still the exact same composition just with added pretty colours.

My dentist said to use mouthwash as it 'stop plaque dead in it's tracks ' - her actual words & since I've started using it I hardly ever have to have fillings these days, I used to use listerine but I've switched to tesco's own brand as it's much cheaper.

Interestingly after suffering with mouth ulcers since i was 13 (now 36) i started using listerine about 2 years ago and i havent had a single mouth ulcer to date.

also i think its helped with my wisdom teeth. although they dont give me pain they are prone to causing infections and abscess ect because a skin flap grows around the wisdom teeth but food can get in ect and cause these said issues. it's my belief that using listerine twice a day after brushing has stopped this as the listerine has reached these potential trouble spots where the tooth brush cant.

im pretty happy using it :)

Is this opinion or fact? Not being an arse, I'm curious :)

Alcohol does not have any anti-bacterial effects at the concentrations in mouth wash, you need >60% alcohol to kill bacteria.

One of the sites linked by Lysander refers to oral cancer. Just last month my wifes dentist was recommending against Listerine because the higher alcohol content could make someone more prone to cancer. So we won't be buying it again....

Its alcohol based, and there was a medical survery recently which linked the use of alcohol based mouth wash with oral cancer.

Make sure you use the alcohol free stuff !

Everything you touch has a link to cancer these days. :p

I've spent 30 odd years dipped in used engine oil, if the stories are to be believed I should be in sealed metal container by now with TOXIC written on it!

Meh I've started using mouthwash due to the fact that I have wisdom teeth growing right in the back of my mouth that I can't reach so well. I wouldn't really say I love or hate it though, you're not supposed to *like* the taste of the stuff anyway.

this is what my dentist recommended me to use and it's great stuff. i've tried a fai few and this is my favouite for taste and results. dentist did say not to use it after brushing just when you want a quick top up clean as the sodium0 fluoride protecting your teeth is far weaker then toothpaste so you put something like 1400ppm on our teeth when brushing, then mouth wash leaving just 250ppm. i use it after lunch as can't be bothered to brush then.
