Would you buy an electric car ?

Yes.

But since I have to park on the road, I doubt I can run a charging cable across the footpath.

I have noticed more electric charging posts in Newcastle, and a few at hospitals.

yeah, when the work.

500mile range + decent performance (<9s 0-60) + instant recharge

That would defiantly be the end for the internal combustion engine, but not sure you need 500 miles between charges.

250 miles, 0-60 in around 10 seconds and 90 miles an hour would easily make them viable for most people IMO.

I'd never get an electric car :p

I think the plugin hybrid is more feasible as most journeys can be done pure EV without the implications of a large pack for the next 15-20 years.

500 miles... a lot of cars dont have that range and dont fill in seconds.... 150kWh at 1000kg of battery would give u that range. Imagine the mass of the car though daily journeys using way more electricity than they have to aswell. Not to mention you wouldnt be able to charge it overnight at home fully.

I would miss the sound of the engine so much, even a 4pot engine - it just makes driving somehow satisfying.

Do electric cars have gears? I would miss that as well (maybe not in traffic though).

I would, we run 2 cars but the wife's is always on short runs - under 4 miles to work/school with kids etc. MPG is awful from her car as it never gets up to temp - an electric car would make huge sense for us!
