im going to go with a previous suggestion:

.....we could build that :D

hehe

I dont have a lot of time to put towards the design or building of a new spawn but i'll certainly help wherever i can.

The rail system should be fairly easy to do, but I think we should have a double track, so one going and one coming.

Just split it 4 ways n/e/s/w and have it in the middle but just under spawn :) can call it a subway :o

Minecart mania will definitely be installed. I may remove the 'admin control' plugin though (that's the one that lets you tap to change directions/etc and makes the whole booster system pointless).

Millers picture is a good example in all seriousness. Spawn on a little park with a fountain. Square.

Then have a nice big path 8 other smaller squares and on the corners have the buildings.

Surround this with a small wall, have four exits out and a nice path so people can build off the path.

Below ground have a rail system that mimics the path and you can just have a station up to the ground level for the rail.

it has to be minecart mania based, boosters are too unreliable and a pain in the arse tbh lol

I'd much prefer a vault system like the mini-vaults I set up on the server towards 'the end'. I don't think the old style vaults are a good idea now that we have chest protection/etc. It will feel far more sociable and less deserted to see other people using their mini-vaults than having a massive underground cave complex.

yeah we used to run a bank system that was basically this. it worked fine. gar and the admin guys at the time build a bank with chests that people could reserve which were then restricted to them.

To be honest, the smaller spawn is, the better.

Assuming I've not missed anything, the only things we need at spawn are:

1) Square for /spawn area
2) Railway entrance (ideally a gate to the nether, as close to spawn as possible)
3) Vault area

...Hmm..that's it, isn't it?

Something like that we could fit in a very small space, have walls around it and a small gap and allow people to build whatever they like beyond that.

I think utility should be the main thing at spawn really.

Ah, cool :)_

Thats what i thought at the time. It makes even more sense now we have access to different coloured blocks. but in all seriousness its not actually the worst design in the world

Yup, have the four buildings on each corner and a subway below the central park.

With the portal, you could put in one of the spare squares.

Think of the design as the tool box crafting area and the separation being little paths. Make it quite small, nothing massive as it becomes pointless.

I reckon having a complete free for all at spawn might be bad though. Having a small area with the important utilities would allow for community buildings just outside of the spawn area, which would mean that the area would still be busy (until everyone completes their buildings and moves on, at least).

edit: @Tummy: Sounds good.

Then you could just plonk a community spawner and farm at like 100 blocks north and just have a subway station there. Sign post it and were done :)

*100 blocks is an example.

Make it simple in design as well, so builds in spawn can be just smooth stone. Paths gravel with sand next to it. so 4 blocks wide (like millers town) just sign post everything well.

Wall only needs to be 4 or so blocks high, so we have a boundary for the town but we still want new players and old alike to go "wow" when they see what other people have built.

May I point out that as a newcomer I found the layout of the town square to be very confusing.

Clearly labelled walkways with symmetric lots would have been a lot better and also the centre of town should be where all the action is, so might I suggest leaving space for some much larger community builds in the centre so as to keep the place busy.

Builds should be kept in along a road that runs straight and only folks at clearly marked signs.

I spent a good half hour trying to find an empty spot and even using your geomap thingy I found it incredibly hard to find the location.

Just to recap:
  • Straight roads that are clearly marked
  • The spawn area for community pieces
  • Symmetrical layout from the central spawn

I know I am new, but this does give me a different view on things from a layout perspective. I only found the giant robot by sight as the signs were next to useless.
