HELP! New PC is broken :(

Yeah, ive learnt my lesson a few times with cheap PSUs, and ALWAYS look athe the wattage on the 12 volt rail, rather than the overall wattage!!

i got a 500w with my 5770 build and (came with it - crap company obvs - prebuilt)
it blew and broke my mobo, got them replaced, blew again, so i got a 600w cheap one and it worked fine. i then upgraded to a 6970 and it blew (luckily i already bought a new psu - tx750w corsair)
by then i looked at some stuff on the psu, and it said 600w, but only 200 on the 12 volt rail - way under what is needed for the gpu and cpu, the corsair however says 750w - 720 on the 12 volt rail. - plenty.

I left a support ticket, hopefully they will get back to me soon.

In regards to the description, I see nothing there to suggest that it can't handle what I put in it. It has a pci express 16x slot and a slot for AMD 3 socket processor so it's got to expect some people putting nice stuff in.

In regards to the review, I didn't read it and shouldn't be expected to make a judgement on a single persons opinion. I expect the description to contain what I need to know about what I'm buying, which I think is fair!

Anyway i'll have to wait and see what OC says. I'm worried about my sound card though :(

I assume you checked the suitability of your PSU before buying the gpu? I know that AMD spec 450watt minimum and that the PSU has a pci-e connector? Looking at the review, I don't think that PSU has the correct connector (native). If that is the case then you made a mistake and purchased a GPU that was too powerful for the system.

RMA the PSU. It's clearly died. The other parts may have been killed too, but without a PSU you'll not know. If your expensive (£300 soundcard in a £95 barebone??) soundcard has been killed then I don't see OC replacing that.

Yes it well... great brand. Lol slightly overkill for your system. a £50 reputable brand one would have sufficed. One extreme to the other.

Great PSU though, Just hope your other components are ok... good luck :)
 
Well I wanted a quiet one (because my hi fi is plugged into it) and one that will last for a long time. No idea if it is quiet but the brand name seems to suggest it is!

The phone guy recommended I get a min of 650w as well.

Just want a quality one I'll just plug in and forget about forever. Like, it's sorted now. I've been plauged with computer problems for so long now, just want to get one that works
 
hainv read this makes me realise even more now why guys like STulid and Redmint always spec 'brand' PSU's when quoting new builds. If you are going to spend 600 notes on gear it makes sense to spend good on getting a decent branded PSU.

I guess the motto for PSU's really is buy cheap = buy twice and probably buy replacement for everything you shot when the PSU blew ?

not if you plan on future upgrades, putting bigger GPU / sli, xfire in the future. Buying more watts = more options further down the road and not having to buy another PSU when you do your next upgrade I guess

But the 500W PSU in the build was a crap no-name brand that probably had less than 240 watts (20 amps) of power on the 12v rail (the critical rail in a modern PC) - the other 260 watts would be on the 3v and 5v rails.

Consider the BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W Power Supply @ £42.98 inc VAT. It has 44 amps on the 12v rails which is great for your build. It's also got some good reviews and a very high efficiency. High efficiency = low excess heat = low temps = low noise.

My Corsair modular PSU came with a bag of cables that could be used to connect PSU to other hardware/fans and I'd imagine its the same with other manufacturers as well.

Argh you lost me there. I never understood power numbers. I just assumed it was labelled 'Overclockers Value PSU 500w' that 500w was enough to power my system.

I don't mind overkilling psu as someone else mentioned as it lets me upgrade later and not have to worry about it for many years to come. Also im so fed up atm that I just want to buy one and be done with it!
