A question about urine for biology boffins

If he's peeing into a bottle in his own bedroom why would he need to wash his hands?

Urine is sterile.

Urine is only sterile within the body, once it's out it's fair game for a multitude of bacteria.

Let me guess, you're one of those disgusting people who don't wash their hands after going to the toilet? Euch.

Is the OP my old housemate from uni? He used to pee in bottles and leave them around the flat. Thing is it was a one floor flat with only the two of us living there!

He once peed into a bottle of off milk and then just left it on the side in the kitchen!

My old flatmate did this but with a fresh orange juice carton, left it on the work top (I was in the shower after a night out, he woke up absolutely bursting so mildly understandable).

I almost took a glug from the carton before the smell hit me :o :(

No, you should not have protein in your urine

Which is why you shouldn't ask for medical advice on an internet forum. Protein in urine is quite common. While excessive protein would indicate UTI, STD or CKD/AKI, low amounts indicate no more than slight kidney inefficiency, and having protein precipitate out of standing urine isn't hugely unusual, nor is it an indication of poor health.

OP, the sediment is mostly (by volume) protein strands. They'll form a fluffy white layer at the bottom of an undisturbed urine specimen. There'll likely be a small layer of very fine salts that have precipitated out of solution at the bottom, but these will be below the protein and would be very, very fine - if you stir it up, you'll see a fine cloud of particles on close inspection. The majority will be protein. I can't think of the exact term for the liquid portion remaining - if the sample were centriuged, it'd be called the supernatum, but I don't think that applies to settled solutions - but it'll be clearer than when you first produced it because the protein would then have been evenly distributed throughout, giving the urine its turbid quality. If it seems to you like there's a large amount of sediment, if you're worried about it, go and see your doctor. Explain what you did and what happened - doctors will just assume the worst if you try and make yourself look innocent.

Interesting side note - I deal with some fairly rank specimens in my day to day job. I'll never forget a 24hr collection that we had to dilute 1:1000 to get a protein low enough for our analysers to detect - it was the consistency of egg white. The human body is a mysterious, disgusting place.

Thats just discusting, dont drink before bedtime? lol... Or just grow some and walk to the toilet quietly at night...?

Just what the hell dude...

I was going to post pictures but there is no change in the samples yet. Unless it would be useful as a reference point.

It would serve no benefit. As soon as someone responds with 'that's fine' or 'there's a lot of sediment in there' it would constitute medical advice and the thread would be locked. It'd be best if you left the pics alone, else some idiot would be bound to comment on their assessment of your health - it's down to you. If you're nervous about it, see a doctor. That's the only advice you should be taking from an internet forum.

Saying that, I'd like to see the pics out of professional interest. That's probably pretty weird...

+1 except my interest is purely morbid curiosity, thankfully chemical engineers don't have to dig around in bodily fluids... Egg-white "protein" huh? (referring to your previous post) :P

Aye, it was like pouring syrup. By far not the most strange or disgusting thing I've seen in my humble 2 1/2 years in a medical lab, though. How does blue poop grab you? Or blood that came out of the vein pale pink? Maybe a kidney stone the size of a grape - passed 'naturally'?

Edit:
Commenting on how much sediment is in there isn't medical advice, it's just making an observation.

Not really. Saying there's a lot of sediment directly infers that you're passing more large molecules than you should be, and that's medical advice. It's a fine line - I'm certainly not happy walking it, I'd imagine the dons wouldn't be either.

This is no longer about medical advice really its more amateur science as we want to see what the sediment is through experimentation. If I wanted real medical advice that I had genuine concern about I would not post on a forum that would be silly. Thats what GPs get paid for.

I must point out 2 things.

1: You can urinate while you have an erection
2: If you don't urinate when the girlfriend comes over, Do you not have ze sex? Maybe I'm alone in this but after sex, I ALWAYS need to take a pee. I'm sure women have a bar inside their Funzone
