New Xbox?

Yeah, let's go back to cartridges :D

Seriously though, isn't the problem with using solid state storage as an alternative to CD/DVD that the extra demand on chips would cause the price of them to skyrocket?

I'd love to see it though. Having to wait for games to load felt like a complete step backwards when I first got a PSX after trading in my MegaDrive :)

Do you think we'll see the same kind of quality leap as from PS2 > PS3? (Discounting the resolution increase.) Will 3D be in every game?

The ability to run two screens from one xbox, split screen gaming is for the poor.

I'd also like this one to run hot enough to heat my whole house and the water supply instead of just my bedroom.

this is where 3D tellys will help, Sony have developed tech to use one 3D telly to show 2 different pictures so it effectively split screen on one telly

Exactly, the more competition the better. If another major player hit the market, you can guarantee we would see bigger better games sooner.

But we won't, there is no space for anyone else.

Yes and if there was an open platform, you would get loads of indie developers releasing games etc. so more choice = more competition between studios = better games.

same as always.

improved controller
better graphics
faster load times
bigger games - like oblivion, gta etc that have ridiculously sized maps
smaller quieter less buggy hardware

id buy one tomorrow no matter what they do. xbox360 has been the best console experience ever for me. I havent had any hardware failures so that obviously helps.

There's no incentive for Sony and MS to do that though. They might both be in the games console business but their attitudes and strategies are very different.

I'm thinking more digital distribution like Steam, Live and PSN. Not Cartridges LOL

The next console will definitely rely on optical storage. Digital distribution is still in its infancy really (Steam aside), and the pricing would put a lot of people off. It'd also destroy the retail market, which is who Sony and MS rely on to sell the consoles and hardware in the first place.

I want slots for 4 wired controllers again, or have it wireless controllers that come with a charging wire like PS3 pads.
Swappable laptop hard drives BUT included as standard as well so it can be taken advantage of in every game.
Black and white 2 built into the console :D
Customisable software to change the sound when it starts up. One day it will say 'this is sparta' and the next it'll say 'time to finish the fight' while other days it'll sound like a car racing off etc.
customisable OS, in other words let hackers get a hold of the PS4 code and create a hack so we can run there games with emulators. BTW some of these are jokes.

I don't think we will be seeing/hearing anything until late next year I think developers are starting to hit the limit of what the Xbox 360 can do and we are starting to see PC games drastically out pacing the consoles (well end of this year we will). So I expect to see the new console out late 2013 as a rough guess, my guesses are

  • a more powerful system that is possible for £400
  • maybe no optical media with it using USB/SD as retail based sales (depending on security).
  • Much larger base on DLC/download games and maybe some sort of "OnLive" like service such as streaming demo's then a few years after release streaming games.
  • Hopefully backwards compatibility with some sort of up scaling in the emulation.

You won't see streaming of games, it would destroy the sales in this country if they did that with no game you could run and play without downloading it. My internet wouldn't be good enough to steam a game and play online or even to just download a 25 gig game.

Also I wouldn't want to, I wouldn't want to tie up my connection trying to download 25 gig while the rest of the family wanted to use the net.

I can't see it not being optical media as it's cheaper than producing a 25 gig+ memory stick of SSD device.

If they went the digital distribution way, Virginmedia users would be stuffed. They'd have to download overnight while everyone else can download during the day.

Then there is the problem if you have a download cap on your broadband.

I think they'll just use Blu-ray but include single use codes in the box for every game. So as soon as the game launches, you'll need to link it to your PSN/XBox Live account. Then when you sell it on, it will cost the next buyer a tenner to buy a code to launch the game.

I'd like to see a full download service. Internet connections are getting faster all the time. when the Xbox 360 was being designed, I was probably still on 56k or maybe had just moved up to 512k. The next gen is probably a couple of years away so by the time It's in its prime, we will probably mostly be on 50/100mb connections. you could say similar with HDDs sizes/prices. It won't be an issue. Anyway, their 'typical' aimed user is only going to buy 5-6 games a year. If an online system was done properly, it could bring many benefits. there's no point restricted a generation of consoles that will probably be released in 2012-2014 and be good untill 2020+ by today's internet connections.

How about being able to download and play any game for 30min for free. After that it becomes locked untill you either buy it or delete it. and how about being able to buy gaming hours rather than the full game or nothing. If a mate at work asked me to play Fifa online with him, I'd have to say no because I'm not interested in football and also because I simply don't own the game. BUT if I had the option of downloading it for free and playing the free trial I would. then say I like it, I could buy 1 gaming hour and play some more. If this went on and I found that I actually enjoyed the game which is possible, I could buy the full game and have my gaming hours refunded back to my online wallet. No loss to them, they have sold a game. There's lots of possible benefits, those are just a couple of examples.

I hope that they wait at least 2 years because, even though they could make a good improvment on the current gen, once you draw the line, that's going to be it for 5+++ years. The current gen is still 'good enough' so it's better to wait a bit longer. And also, each improvment in tech is less important than the last. you will probably never get a SNES/MD -> PS1/saturn jump again. the longer you look back, the bigger the jumps. Also look up the specs of the PS1, PS2 and PS3. They are vastly different in every way. RAM, CPU, Graphics etc. All clockspeeds are increased by many many times. If they were to release a PS4 any time soon, it would probably have a smiliar CPU, maybe with 20% extra clockspeed (I know CS isn't everything) a GPU based on a PC GPU of around GTX 460 performance etc. It wouldn't be a big enough jump for the public. It would make headline news that "PS4 is no better than PS3"

I recon they've been working on it for years, so its no great surprise to me. Unfortunately in the world of gaming nothing stays up to date for very long hardware wise so not to have a successor to current hardware in the pipeline is a bad business decision. The reason I say "unfortunately" is because in order to stay up to date that means we as gamers have to part with more cash and hardware over the years has become pretty expensive. However, after seeing the Cryengine 3 and Unreal Engine 3 tech demos I have to say if our games will look like that and be playable in real time with those levels of graphic performance its a very exciting prospect (as long as we get to keep physical media that is).

They could allow you to start downloading a game a month before release and then unlock it on release day like steam do. I personally love the way steam works and never encounter problems with downloading a game and i've downloaded some huge games. I'm also not bothered about having the disk or box but would love a library of games stored on a hard drive that i could just pick from without inserting different disks for each one.

This whole digital distribution thing isn't which craft! it's been successfully working for years on PC. And as for shops not willing to sell consoles because they can't sell games that's rubbish, As long as they can make a profit they will sell the consoles. Also think of all the places that sell smartphones, Computers and Blu Ray players that don't sell the media to go with them. Christ Sony even have there own stores and isn't Microsoft opening it's own stores?

I think we've got at least 2 years till the next gen and I reckon most people's broadband will be able to cope by then.
