So which Jap cars had more power and cost less money without looking chavvish then?

In comparison to the Sierra or the Escort?

Ill admit "more power" was a mistake, I should have said "roughly the same power"

Never really got the ford cosworth scene, you could get Jap cars with more power for less money that didnt look anywhere near as chavish. The RS200 looked awesome though...

I'm guessing you didn't grow up watching them on the motorsport scene, or see them when they were brand new in the showrooms?

I remember years ago one when the first UK Police Force to buy a Cosworth (for chasing joy riders etc) had it stolen from their compund before they'd even used it.

I've always wanted a Cossie (RS500, Escort, 4wd Saphire, 3door or 2wd Saphire in that order), but it was never to be. By the time I was old enough they were becoming old/expensive collectors cars.

I used to love these as a kid, looking at those pictures now those does nothing for me, just a cruddy shaped sierra with grills in the bonnet and a stupid whale tail.

I still love the escort cossies though.

I do though appreciate the condition he's kept that car in.

Thread is predominantly about the Sierra RS Cosworth. It came out in 1985, at which time Japan had nothing even close to be honest. In fact, nobody did.

k, ill go with the Mitsubishi Starion (up to 197hp unleaded, 225hp leaded), the Nissan 300ZX MK1 (205hp), the Toyota Supra MK3 (230-276hp). I'd also like to point out the BMW M3 with 195-238hp. It should also be pointed out that due to the size of the Sierra it oculd be compared to the M5 which was even more powerful.

Both the Sierra/Escort cossies look like a chavs wet dreams, when the scooter loving saxo/astra owners spent stupid amounts on ripspeed gear in the 90's that is what they wanted their cars to look like.

I did but im also pretty biased, my uncle worked for British Leyland so I had it drummed into me from an early age if you want a decent car buy BMW or Japanese, everything else is unreliable garbage.

It (Sierra Cos) does still look like an old Ford with a big ass spoiler and a loud can so "everyone" won't suddenly turn in awe on the street today. :p

Not unless their big ford fans. There are many better 90's cars (mainly jap) than the ford cosworth in terms of looks and performance.

Oh shut up, I'm sure there is but it's how that car makes people feel, the sheer badassness of that car is hard to beat.

You drive around in your 90's Jap special, you will still never be as badass as if you had a Sierra Cossie.

Read the "Verdict" column

Or we can fast forward a few years:

Same verdict.

So a car mag says it was the best at that time, ill treat that with the same credibility I do top gear lap times, why is 150mph important when the NSL at the time was the same as it is now and track days were unheard of at that time? why does it rave about the £16,000 price tag yet not mention the insurance for a lot of people would surpass that figure?

I think ill stick idolizing the better looking, better performing, cheaper to run and more reliable Jap cars of the day...

As we have already established - there weren't any. None that were as good. If you are talking about things like the Pulsar, Impreza, R32/33 GTR and so on, they weren't "of the day".
