The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

OLED is nicer... but not a deal breaker. Worth paying £10 more or so IMO (a few pop up on ebay very regularly). I specifically went for an OLED when I got my girlfriend one and the screen is awesome for such a cheap phone.

I put a custom ROM on my phone last night, the Japanese Jellyfish 2.2 one that orangesanfrancisco.co.uk recommend. It seems pretty good so far, certainly a little snappier than the orange original and with none of the apps that I'll never need clogging up the app list.

Yeah, that's the one I went with first, it seems to be one of the older roms now but still works really well and I've had no problems with it.

I have wifi off gps off 3g data off so its just 2g with no data and even with no calls after 24 hours its less than halfway

TFT have a faster touch interface (but only very slightly), Text will be easier to read, but black won't be deep and there may be slight back-light bleed.

OLD - deep dark blacks, no back light bleed, brighter richer colour. Due to the make up of the matrix text will never be as sharp (but shouldn't be too noticeable)

You're phone isn't sleeping. Mine just did this when i installed a new rom, but I managed to sort it out.

Pressing the on off button at the top of the phone should send it to sleep. Now if you press the home, back or menu button the display should not come on. If it does that means your phone is being prevented from sleeping.

If the phone can't sleep you'll lose up to 40% of battery in a 8 stint.

Apps that are noturious for prevent the phone from sleeping are: Dialer, Facebook app and radio app. Check if any of those are running.

You are best deleting the preinstalled facebook app and installing the one from the market.

reboot your phone after the install.

Also when you charge your phone, leave it plugged in for a good 30mins-1hr even after it said its charged.

Tying to root my phone now and having a few problems, following these root instructions which I'm sure many here have done:

To Root:

* Download the ClockWork Recovery Mod. (Download)
* Turn off your phone and take out the battery. Unplug the phone from the PC / charger.
* Replace the battery and turn the phone back on with 'volume up' held. The device will stay at the 'green android' screen.

The bolded part doesn't work for me. With the volume-up button held the phone starts up as normal. What's going on here? Is there a way around it?

On mine I'm sure I had to keep volume down pressed.
I used the www.orangesanfrancisco.co.uk site and everything was straightforward on a new B10 build number.

Thanks mate, the volume down button worked for me.

Another question though I'm afraid and one I am a lot more concerned about.

I installed ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.8, and then installed Japanese Jellyfish as I understand it is the most stable custom build of 2.2. After installation and reboot, the phone started up fine and I got the "Touch the android to continue" splash screen, but I couldn't continue from here. After trying to press some of the other buttons on the screen I realised the touchscreen wasn't working.

Bit strange? I figured I must have done something wrong in the install, and I decided to go back to the Orange stock ROM in the meantime. I reinstall the stock ROM, restart the phone, and the touchscreen still does not work.

I followed the rooting and custom ROM installation instructions to the letter, so I don't know what to do now. Hoping a knowledgeable poster can shed some light on this as my phone appears to now be unusable? :(

Well, I've spent approaching eight hours now trying to fix my unresponsive touchscreen and I'm giving up. I've been posting at modaco.com but apparently the only thing I could try at this point is a 'total phone transfer'. And in order to do that, I need to network-unlock the phone first, which I cannot do if the touchscreen doesn't work.

So, I appear to have bricked this phone by doing something that was supposedly completely safe and reversible. If anyone has any suggestions or has had any touchscreen issues that they resolved I would welcome any advice you might have. Right now all I can think of doing is trying to return it to the retailer and hoping that they do not notice I have messed with it.

edit: sorry for double post, I didn't realise I was the most recent poster itt

My touchscreen went unresponsive after installing Japanese Jellyfish!
so I installed the flb froyo blade r10 rom which seems to be a massive improvement as far as responsiveness goes.

:)

I've been advised to try X and Y other custom ROMs, but reverting the phone to stock overwrote ClockworkMod, and the newer SF models don't have fastboot, so I can no longer flash to a different ROM. The phone seems to be bricked for good. I'm going to take it back to the retailer and try to get a new one, wish me luck :P

Good luck!

Hope you get it sorted

|I just changed from JJ9 to FLB as for some reason JJ9 stopped sending texts tried with a bunch of different sms apps too. Just got to get my settings back to how I like them, this rom feels a little slicker and faster so far.

Thanks mate. Just back from the shop now and they took a look at it and gave me a new handset, although they had to replace it with a white one (the original was grey).

I'm in two minds now though, I don't want to use it in stock condition with all the Orange **** on it clogging it up and making it slow as hell, but then this phone is probably from the same production run as the last one and my concern is that if I follow the same instructions to root it, I will brick this one as well.

Seems the biggest problem was not unlocking the original before rooting it, it closed a doorway on recovery. I would unlock then root the new one, lucky escape with the store
