Bargain!!!

Very good deal matey, just hope the electrics are nothing like the ones on my clio (16v model) as iv spent god knows how much money trying to sort it and im still no further forward.

Good luck ;)

From reading just your first post it sort of seemed as if you had bought a fully functioning, 10 month MOTed car for £100, which (given the high price of scrap nowdays) would have been a proper bargain. One with a broken engine doesn't really seem that impressive in comparison.

Jeez, you are all being so defeatist, its not that broken, its a few hours work...as above...find something better for £250
:)

Nice one. It is amazing at the cost of some cars that need a little bit of work purely because people cant be bothered with the trouble (nothing wrong with that but it does leave the bargains to be had for anyone happy to get a little dirty).

Last week I found my (what I consider to be anyway) bargain. 2001 1.7 Ford Puma. Everything in good working order, high milage though (just over 150k) due to a lot of motorway driving, Full service history, cambelt still around 20k (or a couple years) left. Clutch, gearbox, engine still in good nick. Only bits of work that needed doing were new NS/OS wishbone bushes (was £39 for both full wishbones - a couple hours work and done) and NS/OS ARB drop link bars needed changing as they were tapping (£9.99 and about 40 minutes). Rear parcel shelf was a bit tatty (bit of glue and 99p for some new ford hooks) and its done. Car cost £370 + £50 for the new bits.

Not exactly as cheap as £100 but I was very happy and expected to be paying a lot more. Such a fun car to drive, came back from getting it over snake pass with a grin on my face.

You are missing the point, no one is saying it's not a bargain or that you could get something better for £250. You just happened to miss out a rather large bit of information about the car in your OP that's all.

Well did you expect it to be 100% working for £100???
:D

100% working cars for £100 are the real bargains ;). I clearly remember my first BMW E30 that was £100. Polished it, took a few pictures, sold it a few weeks later for £450. You never forget your taste of wheeling and dealing :).

I really need to sort out a unit, trailer and tow car so I can get back on with it :(.

Jezus christ, stop being so sour.

This thread is great for showing the posters true colours ;) Those who say it isn't a bargain probably don't want to get their hands as dirty as those who agree that even with a dead engine its still a bargain.

So what if the engine does turn out to be scrap? What does he loose? Nothing.

Currently looking to bag myself a bargain car at less than £500, which should theoretically be quite doable. However, just spent this afternoon trawling Autotrader and Ebay Motors, and do seem to be struggling a bit. As a student, I'd want it to be as cheap as possible to tax and insure too. Any tips on where else to look?

eBay tends to overprice most things that are in demand (small cheap cars for example), so you're possibly better off looking in local papers for some OAP selling a car they've owned for years. The scrappage scam and high scrap prices mean there aren't too many good, cheap small cars out there ATM.......

Asking round friends and families might also be a good idea

it was a bargain without the cam belt info in the OP, it's still a bargain to him with that info afterwards.

The forum nazis are out to play it seems.

Really? To me it seems like the 'Blown everything completely out of the proportion' crew have decided to have another bit of a moan.

It is really that difficult to believe that some people among us do not think an old clio that is going to need as least it's purchase price spending on it and about a day's worth of spannering (at least) isn't exactly the deal of the century?

Not a single person has said it was a bad buy, but it isn't some sort of once in a lifetime deal you'll be telling your grand kids about.

If he said £200 and neglected the work part it would be a bargain.

Why are the specifics of any concern to you? Seems to me you are picking at details for the sake of it.

Who here has said it wasn't a bargain?

If saying 'it was a bit misleading' makes someone a nazi, then all I can do is laugh at you, a lot. :D

I guess I sort of did, but I'm staying out of the latest debate :p

'Nazis' is plural, but I think Godwin's law has well and truly entered this thread now anyway so you're fine. ;)
