Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I've got to say the MIUI Rom is the best one I have ever used on my Galaxy S. Makes the phone SO much better. I've used stock, DocRom, Darky and loads more.

Difficult to explain, but that's the way it is!!

Cojld you provideSimple install instructions?and a way to get it back to stock etc etc. Looks good is it stable?

Opps tried installing said rom , failed at first hurdle , flashed JP1 coming from DOC's rom and now it just hangs on Samagung galaxy S boot screen.

Can Access download and recovery though , any ideas on how to fix?

Indeed, do both I'd say.

I just went onto Darky's 9.5 from 9.3. Not really noticing a lot of difference yet as it's only been a few hours. Works fine though!

A new Samsung firmware must be close. I can smell gingerbread!

Flashed back to 2.1 then to 2.2 then to MIUI Rom as good and smooth as it is , there is no way that ROM should be a release candidate though.

Full of bugs TBH

I ended up trying the 9.5 also. I too haven't really noticed a difference apart from my GPS seems to lock a hell of a lot quicker.

to be fair with a little bit of fiddling and I guess luck once you get MIUI Rom working its ultra smooth and fast

Might give MIUI a try look different so keep me from getting bored, just have to finish typing up my report before and hand in my demo before I mess my phone up.

Got one of these little beauties just over a month ago now (2 year contract) and it's a fantastic bit of kit.

Mine's a bog-standard Vodafone 2.2 FROYO JP7 model and as usual, Vodafone are dragging their heels getting firmware upgrades out, so for the last couple of days I've been reading up about flashing mine to 2.2.1 JPY.

What are the main differences between 2.2 and 2.2.1 in day to day usage - is it faster, better battery life etc? Is there a more up-to-date stable firmware I could use with my model of SGS?

Happy with the stock UI, so I don't feel any burning need to use things like Darky's, but not ruling it out long term.

I know flashing will void my Vodafone warranty, but presumably when I put my SIM back in, the phone just boots up and connects to the Vodafone network as before, albeit running a 'non-Voda official' firmware?

Correct regarding the Voda stuff. Best way to think about it is the SIM card is enclosed in it's own little fort - the phone can ask it stuff (like who am I? what's my number?) but it can't actually change anything in the SIM unless it receives a special signature from the network with instructions.

Darky's actually ships with stock UI so you know (known as TWLauncher). 2.2.1 had small fixes but nothing major iirc.

You're right, generally, 2.2.1 offers more performance and better battery life, as well as quite a lot of other improvements and bug fixes. A recent firmware would be JS7 or JS8. Go with those as they're improved over JPY. I find operator branded firmwares can be pretty bad, so ditch it!

As for Darky's, it changes a whole lot more than the UI! It's a customisable and sleek experience, with most of the useless stuff ripped out, as well as heaps of optimisations. I really do recommend it, it's not as fool-proof as running a stock Samsung firmware, but you will get better performance and much more freedom.

Although there are no major changes in 2.2.1, it is a culmination of a long progression of smaller fixes, so I'd think of it more like running Windows XP and then putting XP SP1 on afterwards. Definitely worth an upgrade but you can live without. I always want the best from this handset (cost enough!) so I try to keep it on the cutting edge of stable releases.

I'm wondering when we're going to see a stock 2.3 in final form officially released by sanding

I don't think it will be long at all. There have been a couple of beta leaks now and the most recent isn't that far from being an acceptable release. The community have worked quite hard on bringing them up to an acceptable standard, but I don't see the point until there is a stable base to work from.

Thanks for those replies Alex and Myshra - really am up for doing this now, but with JS7 or 8 instead.

I don't have any problems with lag currently, but if there's a downside to the SGS I would have to point to the battery life. However, it can be forgiven for that, in that like the iPhone, I see it as less of a phone and more of a small portable computer. Certainly makes my previous Nokia 5800 look pretty stone-age in comparison!

I'm having to charge every couple of days roughly (maybe sooner if using WiFi a lot), but if this can be squeezed out further with a relatively straightforward flash - I'm not expecting miracles obviously - then Vodafone can stick their constant delays and their bloatware.

I'll see how I go with a flash to JS7 or 8 and if all goes well, then I may well have a closer look at Darky's - nobody seems to have a bad word to say about it!

I squeezed 5 days out of Darky's 9.3 one time. That's with a couple of SMS each day, two 30 sec calls each day and maybe 1 hour total browsing. Light use! Generous use of Screen filter helps a LOT and I always run with data off unless I need it, using SwitchPro widget to turn everything on and off. Normally get 2-3 days, though still waiting to see what Darky's 9.5 is like. The modem isn't as good at least, not great signal strength for me. Fortunately you can specify different modems if you use the Darky Configurator app in the market before flashing.

Right, quick checklist:

1) Have downloaded European JS7 from samfirmware - will grab the JP7 file as well just in case it all goes **** up

2) Have downloaded Odin 1.8 from samfirmware

3) Just need to backup contacts, photos etc

That's me all set now isn't it? Before I start the whole procedure off, is it a good idea to do a factory reset of the phone as it currently stands? Pretty sure I might have read on another forum that it's recommended to do a factory reset once the new firmware is installed and running. Any more 'insider knowledge' it would be handy to know?

Aiming to actually do this sometime this week - I know it should only take roughly 15-30 mins - but seems like I don't get time to fart after work most evenings!

I usually factory reset before flashing. Also, it wouldn't hurt to format the internal SD once you know everything is backed up. Sometimes files that are hanging around from previous apps can cause issues.

Then flash (with full battery) and see how it turns out. I often factory reset after flashing too, but it's not strictly necessary. Depends on what you're flashing, stock firmware should be alright.

Is there any reason it needs a full battery - other than the obvious that you wouldn't want it dying halfway through the process? Just wondered if the act of flashing might otherwise naff up the battery calibration or something?

Slightly paranoid - just wanna get everything absolutely right!

It's still an unnecessary faff if you do mess them up though. You'll need to charge the phone whilst powered off and go through more than one cycle probably. I wouldn't risk flashing if it's less than, say, 40% anyway, as you might run out of battery if it takes a long time and has a bug or similar.
