Been meaning to create a thread on this for a while.

I'v been suffering with sleeping issues since 2009, and the only thing I can describe it as is insomnia.

Its a strange one. I cant pin down the reason why I have developed sleep issues.

Let me highlight its progression overthe last two years.

I remebr talking to people back in 2009 about sleeping issues, which is how I know its been going on sfor so long.

Back in 2009 it used to be that I would struggle to get any sleep on the sunday night before work, but then I would be ok, monday night etc...

Then it started creeping in to Monday night as well. So I would sleep 0 hours on Sunday, and then same again on Monday.

Aover time, this has progressed to some weeks where I will have issues sleeping on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, but then fine the rest of the days.

Other times, I miracoulsly sleep on the Sunday, but then Monday and Tuesday will have issues.

Other weeks, I can go a whole week and sleep 7-8 hours each day including Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

This week I struggled on Sunday and Monday, sleep Tuesday, but then struggled on a Wednesday.

After about 2 years of these, I went to the doctor, and he prescribed me some week sleeping pills.

Usually they work. However some times my insomnia, is a stronger force than the pills and is able to resist!!

When I manage to stay awake against my will after taking a pill, the next day, I feel rotten and dirty, as well as being spaced out.

It is a bit of a problem for me. I feel like Im a different person when I'v sleept, and at present thats one - two days a week, during the working week, im constantly in a state of insomnia or sleep deprevation.

In fact the only way I can sleep on a work day, is if im sleep deprived. If I get a good 7-8 hours sleep on a work day, I may struggle to sleep if im not sleep depreived.

My normal bed time is about 1-1.30am and my wake up time is 9am.

Oh I will list the remedies I'v tried but no luck so far:

1. Staying off computer for the last hour, before bed and reading.

Verdict - fail

2. Switching from showers to baths, becuase supposedly showers refreshes you and bath relaxes.

Verdict - fail

3. Herbal sleeping pills

Verdict - fail

4. Melatonin pills

Verdict - fail

5. Sleeping pills

Hmm 7/10 times they work.

I havent tried lavender oil as I have been suggested.

Any ideas guys?

Also, even during the Xmas holidays, with no work to go to, I had some sleeping issues, where I just could not fall asleep.

I think that sleeping is either a skill you can lose, and only realise it is a skill when you'v lost it, or that being an insomnic is in a way a skill you can learn and get better at with practice.

The answer is very simple.

It started on Sunday night, because deep down you hate your job.

It then has manifested itself into every night, because you hate your job.

Get a new job.

Your job stresses you in some fashion.
Most people I know have more difficulty going to sleep on a sunday night than any other night of the week.

On a more comical note, have you tried using Internet Explorer for a few hours.... might help you sleep.

Have you tried alcohol? This isn't a joke by the way. It might help to prevent you getting trapped in the vicious cycle of focusing on not having fallen asleep yet.

Maybe there's no explanation? Every 5-6 months or so I'll go through a period of about a week where I just can't fall asleep, then it just seems to sort itself again.

Things I've tried that have worked. Work out when you'd like to wake up. For the 16 hours before that don't eat then eat a large meal when you'd like to wake up. I don't know how but this works. Setting you to think that is breakfast time and the next night you feel tried at a good time.

Going to bed earlier (works but didn't fit my life style at all). Having an earlier bed time worked a bit but didn't shortened the time I spent in bed trying to get to sleep.

Not worrying about trying to get to sleep, this one works best for me at least but is really hard to do. Also not worrying if I wake up in the middle of the night.

Doing stuff to make you physically tried is pretty useful too.

Try to not eat atleast 2 hours before you go to bed. If you absolutly must have something then have some milk. It doesn't have to be warm like everyone seems to suggest. Usually I find that I get to sleep much easier when you have no digestion going on in your stomach.

Also as mentioned before, expending energy is one of the best ways of ensuring you face-plant into your bed at the end of the day.

I have a radio that I listen to (with headphones), so if I can't sleep, I know I can just listen to the radio. You could also find some audio material that will teach you stuff, that way if you can't sleep, you use your time productively. Then you won't be so stressed about getting to sleep.

Rgds

... you've been thinking about making a thread about 'not sleeping'
for a while?

Ahh... I'm all ears.

Yea the Internet Explorer thing sounds like it could work!

:p

i had this problem long time ago. turned out it was i went out party every friday/sat so i get up very late on sat and sun morning so very hard to sleep early on sun night.

what time normally you sleep on fri and sat night?

I can maybe help.

Explain to me what happens during the night when you can't sleep. :)

Some times I get in to bed and every thing irrates me.

Hot, cold, a small crease in the sheets.... basically anything.

I wouldnt say I worry about not going to sleep.

I shut my eyes, think of nothing... but the automatic process of drifting in to cloud 9 doesnt happen.

In the past when I used to go to the gym, even that didnt help me sleep, I'v also had episodes, where I'v come slightly drunk on a work day, and still not been able to sleep.

Some time however I just know even before I'v gone to bed I wont sleep. Too much energy, or mental energy. Sometimes it could take me along time to actually fall asleep - 45-1hr...

Like I said before I cant really find the one variable that ties this all together.

Some freinds of mine seem to think its too much computer...... that could be possible, but again, it never used to affect me, and I'v tried reading before bed and it didnt work.

Ahh yes, this I have been doing as well.

The last 3-4 months, I go out on a Saturday, go to bed at around 6-7am, get about 5 hours sleep and then start the whole routine of work again.

However sometimes this has actually helped me. Becuase I go to bed on a Sunday shattered.

Other times, it hasnt changed a thing.
