Well this looks awesome!.. Asus Eee Transformer Tablet

looks like a great tablet. Is it worth replacing an ipad 1?

As you will have read already - some will say yes and some will say no - they cannot give a reason as everyone has differing requirements. Only you can decide.

Which is better - a SUV or a tractor. Farmers will probably prefer a tractor and others the SUV but it is pretty pointless asking either owner which is 'best for you' - They each have their requirements for a vehicle that suits their needs which may or may not coincide with yours.

Questions that result in factual answers rather than those of opinion will stand a far greater chance of you being able to make an informed decision for yourself.

He means the actual launcher, as in the bit that you run apps from. Have a look on the market for GO Launcher or LauncherPro for an example of what a launcher is. A lot of manufacturers make their own launchers like the HTC Sense one or the TouchWiz one on the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

PS. Welcome :)

You mean something like this. VTL.Launcher I am currently using it, but i'm not sure I prefer it over asus's one. It takes a lot of setting up to how you'd like it.

I've never had a ipad so I'm biased, but from what i've tried on a friends ipad, each of these devices has its own uses. I'd slightly favour an android tablet with a keyboard and you can produce as well as consume. Buy what you like or want, not what everybody says is good or bad.

At the checkout at the space rock shop put in 5OFF in the voucher box for 5% off plus another 2.5% via QuidCo ;)
damn.. doesn't work for me.. neither does 5300 - maybe they disabled it for this product..

anyone able to confirm it's not just me?

I picked one up in store yesterday, just on a whim..

The hardware is largely superb, very well built, nice screen (bar some backlight bleed ).

Honeycomb has some real potential and it will offer a completely different and valid experience to any apple product. The notification bar is very slick, the new gmail as an example of things to come is very promising!

However, it's not all been plain sailing for me, so much so,I may return it tomorrow, as it's abit rough around the software edges.

The main problem would be that I have just bought a cheap desire hd and with CM7 with launcher pro, and a healthy dose of 1.5ghz overclocking with a swype keyboard and miren browser, it's the slickest android experience I've ever had. So leading onto the transformer, my initial reaction has been of a slight disappoin.tment, with a number of niggles
- Unless mine is broken, with a fresh factory reset, the desktop, as awesome as it is, its got a slight stutter, when sliding between screens, and the app drawer animation is a bit low frame rate. if you disable animations and pop into a fullscreen app, then back to home you get a nice silky smooth experience, but any overlay animation then puts it back into the lower frame rate mode.
-The stock browser is just not as slick as dolphin or miren, which both force at times making there use a little awkward, and rendering complex sites can struggle a little.
- The stock keyboards aren't too good, especially if you are used to HTC/swype/smart keyboard pro etc, and swype for example won't work on non gsm devices., and other favourite keyboards have little compatibility issues.
- my audio is noticeably louder out the right speaker, which just grates when listening to music.
so, most issues seem to be more that Honeycomb needs a little more time before it marries the awesome new design features(the app switcher/preview is so nice)with a super smooth visual experience. Some people may be very happy with it, but knowing what is about the best apps and performances on gingerbread today and always admiring how slick the visuals are on the ipad, just tips me over the edge with the audio inbalance and quite uneven backlight bleeding to returning it

Worked a charm for me here mate, got £19 off :D And should hopefully get 2.5% off with quidco which is awesome!!!

After a quick test it seems the 5OFF discount only works when you have gone on to the quidco website and clicked on the cashback link for comet. Otherwise it doesn't work.

awesome! thank's a lot for that - looks like i'll have to sign up for quidco :)

Mine has arrived, sod's law means I've been quite busy at work so I've not really had a proper play yet. First thoughts are size - after coming from a Galaxy tab this thing is massive and a lot more cumbersome to use. I'm really used to handling the Galaxy Tab like a phone which obviously isn't possible on this. Without the keyboard/dock I can't really see what use this device has for my own needs.

The screen is much much much better than the Advent Vega I was looking at buying last December. It certainly feels like a quality piece of kit.

Where did you get yours from, all the retailers I can see are online only at the moment?

Although I had already bought one via mail order, I needed to get something else from a meteor store on Saturday and was surprised to see a Transformer on display right next to an Ipad2! I don't know what the stock levels are.

Indeed, I walked into the store, and they amazingly had just booked 2 into stock, one had just sold, I was just lucky that I walked in at that time..

I've had it refunded today, Just the speaker/screen issues where enough to cause me to return it, but I wasn't overly happy that despite how amazing HC is as a desktop environment, it lacks enough apps/widgets at the moment, and all my favourite apps seem to have small compatibility issues..

I know things are changing, the new 'slightly tweaked' Gingerbread to be released soon has compatibilty stuff to allow apps to work on GB and HC, so things will improve, but I'm not waiting months for that to happen, I want to use it now!!

The other thing was the slightly 'low frame rate' thing, is this just an optimisation thing with HC being so new, or is it that 1280*800 is asking a little bit too much of the Tegra2?

But as Tablets go, hardware wise, it's a superb bit of kit, if HC is improved over the coming months, and all the current apps get tweaked to work better, I would pick that tablet up again without hesitation, the promise of 18 Hours with the keyboard dock and the build quality + that awesome screen would be hard to resist!!

Saying all that, I'm half tempted to get a Vega again, sure the screen isn't a patch on it (Although fine if viewed head on), but with the Modaco Stuff, + Launcher Pro, it really was exceedingly slick/smooth and for under £200 it's not a bad stop gap!
