how many sick days is too many or too often?

With any new job you really shouldn't go off sick unless you are literally dieing. Having said that if you dont take anymore time off over the next few months im sure all will be forgotten.

Iv not had a sick day since I started working offshore 4 years ago, iv been sick but there isn't an option to home. Just have to grin and bare it and get on with your work.

I wish people would take more days sick rather than coming into work infectious and spreading it around.

Some sick days cannot be avoided. When I started my job I started on nights and felt sick after a few weeks of lack of sleep working through the nights and struggling to sleep at home as i have kids so they put me on days, only had 2 days sick during the 7 weeks on nights, and then I had nearly 2 weeks off, signed off by doctor with pnemonia (spelt wrong im sorry), then my twins were in intensive care and had 1.5 days off as I was rushed into hospital with a heart condition and now because that has happened in 1.5 years I am now seen as unreliable which is making it hard to apply for a higher position etc and its people who take sick days because they want an extra day off work that make it worst for the rest of us.

I try and work as much as I can, I was even trying to discharge myself from the hospital to come into work for the fear of losing my job :/

on mixture of too much sun on the weekend and staring at a monitor all day
what he really means is

"a mixture of to much booze at the weekend and on monday i called in sick because i had a hangover so i sat on the pc all day"

7 years, no sick days :D

I've gone in work feeling like death warmed up, people are just sissy's/lazy a lot of the time. Obviously there are your REAL cases for being off ill but I reckon 90% people could go in if they really wanted.

Hopefully a respectable record in whatever your occupation is, but obviously it doesn't apply to everyone. For me, dragging myself into work when I feel like 'death warmed up' is reckless and irresponsible - if you screw something up, people could die. I've never come into work so much as hung over - precisely the reason that I never drink if I'm working the next day, which is a first in my own job history.

Edit: Sounds really ominous :p but sometimes it scares me to think how easy it would be to kill someone in my job.

If your illness/sickess isn't contagious, then you should just tough it out and go. I've went to work with sickness and diarrhoea but only lasted 4 hours with that untill I had to go home, then I passed out and was taking to A&E. I've went to work with no sleep wihich is actually incredibly difficult. Its like trying to work drunk. I've also went to work with a full blown gout attack in my left foot which was not easy. Couldn't walk and had to limp about. Did that for 2 weeks untill the swelling went down. Totally against doctors requests but I've had 6 sicks days this year and can't take anymore.

Until end of last year it was about 5 days in 5 years. 1 stint of food poisoning, and one day of the the squirts. But end of last year had 5 weeks of + more on light duties.

Anyway doesn't look good going off at a new job sometimes. It can't be helped but if you don't go of from now on then it won't be so bad. But missing work for a headache seems a Bit odd.

I love when managers say "I've only been sick once this year!"

Do I have your immune system? Do you live in my house? Do you eat what I eat? NO? Then stfu

Owning 3 business I like to give employes the benefit of the doubt for the first month. As sometimes can take people time to settle and adjust to a new job. But after that first month they will start getting ball busted.

I'd probably say I average 2-3 days a year. Once had a one off 6 weeks but you can't really legislate for everything.
If you're massively contagious or just going to spend your day playing the martyr and going on about it then you may as well not turn up in my opinion.

its the morons who come in sick and spread their colds around because they buy into the i dont take sick days crap

Most of the times when you're contagious is before your symptoms actually show so it's too late then anyway so you've probably already been given the virus.

In the last year I've had 4 days off sick. I'm a teacher so there's always stomach bugs, sickness viruses etc going round from the little darlings. I'm in my first year of teaching too, and it seems to follow that you build up immunity as you get more experience!
It's not worth going in if you're ill, particularly if you've got a stomach bug or something. Not worth passing it on to my whole class.

I know how bad migraines can be. I went into work last Thursday with a migraine. I shouldn't have, because I know how bad they get (thankfully I don't get them often, last one I got was way back in October and during the school hols).

Anyway, I went, white as a sheet, black rings under my eyes, dosed up on cocodamol (didn't work) - felt so dreadful that I obviously couldn't really effectively teach 29 children. Ended up throwing up and getting sent home by my headteacher.

Caused more fuss than if I'd just stayed at home - they had to call in a supply teacher at the last minute and find someone to watch my class while they got there.

I went straight to bed when I got home (11:30) - boyfriend woke me up when he got home from work at 7:15.

Was fine to go back to work the next day but really shouldn't have gone.

If you feel ill, you feel ill - nobody's going to give you a pat on the back and say how amazing you are for coming in when you're poorly.
