how many sick days is too many or too often?

It depends on where you're working. One time I had to stay in hospital over night after collapsing from heart pain (I have a bad heart), and the head of my department still tried to kick a fuss. I made the self-righteous idiot look like a right moron.

If you're sick, there's nothing you can do about it. I usually tend to go in unless I'm too ill to physically get there (within reason). Also if it's contagious, keep that **** at home.

For such an intelligent man, I honestly can't believe you posted that. :D

One thing I noticed personally after 17 years working where I barely took much time off, as soon as my son started nursery I find he gets something then a few days later I get it. I've been ill more often in the last 12 months than probably the last 10-15 years put together (not always leading to time off).

Prior to having a child in the house I was rarely ill apart from xmas get togethers when you always get a few ill kids :D

I've found this as well. And twice in the last year I've had violent stomach bugs, something I don't ever remember having since childhood. The only time I've ever puked as an adult it's been alcohol induced. :D

Kids bring everything home.

So yeah with a kid you're going to be getting every ilness that any kid in their school has got.

You also end up taking emergency holiday or days off unpaid for kid related things as well. Like when they get sick and one of you needs to stay home and look after them, or when they break a foot at school and they ring you at work to come to A&E with them :(

I don't really get how some people can have loads of sick days yet others hardly any or none at all. Is it really that random or is there something about those who take sickies quite a lot...

I applaud anyone with an unblemished sickness record and abhor pathetic sickness records that are blatent sickies.

I do however think it is a massive generalisation to assume that people are either one end of the scale or the other.

My sickness record is average but is about to nosedive as I am facing surgery. I am however prone to 3-4 ear infections a year that cause me the most unbelievable pain. I don't just mean a little bit of ear ache (I put up with that and mild tinnitus almost constantly) but severe swelling into my eustachian tubes and shocking nausea. It usually takes 4-5 days for antibiotics to even dent it and now that I am diabetic the doc is more reluctant to resort to prescribing them.

I actually don't consider myself particularly sickly but am just hampered on the odd occasion by recurring illness.

We also use the Bradford Scoring index which soon highlights the people who don't turn in on Mondays on a regular basis after a heavy weekend.

I guess what I am trying to say is, there are plenty of reasons why people might need to take sick leave and just stating they are throwing a sicky is a little blazé.

I went to work today and I could easily have called in sick. Even my manager commented on how rough I looked. Joys of having a sick child! I swear they amplify the illness :p

I was brought up that unless you have to go to the doctor then you go in to school/work. Think I've had 1 day off in 3 years and that was taken as an emergency day off to sort out some finances when someone cleaned out my account.

just after I left school me and my friend got jobs. After 3 or 4 days both of us were sent home from work (we worked in different places) It turned out I had the flu and unfortuntly he had testicular cancer so he was off for 5 months :\ this was nearly 9 years ago and I worked there for 18 months afterwards until I got another job and hes still at his job and hasnt had a day off since.

In my school years I was the sickliest kid on earth "mummy I don't feel well" but in truth I don't think I've ever actually been ill other than when I've had infected wounds that I've not cleaned properly, I've ended up with septicemia twice and it's not a lot of laughs.

In my 17 years of working I've never been ill, and my childs the same, half way through secondary school and never needed a day off, we're both either lucky or have immune systems armed with nukes.

I know people who have not been off sick for 5 years. No excuse unless it is physically impossible for you to get there (and depending on the type of job you do)

I really hate people who come in sick and spread it. Our place is open plan but with a really innefective air circulation system and in the 20 months I have been there I have been ill loads. Not gone off sick with it though but really getting fed up of it all.

Genuine facepalm.

I need to be physically unable to do my job to not go in or at risk of throwing up on the desk.

Or in severe pain, which is rare and only when I contract an ear infection (I suffer with them badly)

I'm not sure how so many people manage to spend so much time ill. I have watched people leave, from work, absolutely fine on the premise of being ill. Yeah....alright. In 8 years I have perhaps had 7 days off ill. And was signed off for 3 days outside of that.

I'm usually the 2-or-3-days-per-year type person. Earlier this year though I had to take 2 weeks off due to an eye problem. Couldn't wear contact lens and without it was house-bound. After all, you can't do much if your prescription is -26.5. It was pretty sickening that I had to take those 2 weeks off but it was the first time in my career.

I've gone to work so ill that I've passed out before so I don't really accept people who stay off work because of a sniffle and a cough.

But it totally depends on the workplace. I would always go in and do what I could but my boss would see that I was ill and send me back home anyway. If you try to go in it might get better or it might get worse, but at least your boss sees that you are trying and not pulling a sickie.

If you are ill then there is nothing to do about it. But you should try either way :)

its the morons who come in sick and spread their colds around because they buy into the i dont take sick days crap

^^ THAT!
then i catch it and i have a few days off in bed from the hot/cold fever, if i feel rotten.. **** work, i got ill there so they can go whistle :)
stop letting ill people go to work, then i wouldnt get ill and need the sick days, if i get fired for it, tribunal time :p

if i were an employer, warnings would be given for turning up at work with colds/flu, oh yes

If you haven't got the confidence to stay off work when you are on the verge of passing out, that's your own issue. You are an adult and companies have sickness policies for a reason and self-certification is there for a reason.

Abuse it at your peril but for the love of god don't think you have to go in to work to be inspected by your boss and given approval to go home. That's ridiculous.
