6990+6970 tri-fire...

6990 arrived - cannot wait to get home :)

It comes with a shedload of stuff, including a much sought after 10cm CF bridge. Shame I paid £20 for some from the US

@ Gareth, do you have the 6990 in the top slot or the second? I have heard that it's practially easier to put it in the bottom slot, just in case you need to disable crossfire?

pawn off your 6970's for £200 e/

Buy 2x 6990's :D

Quad fire is hit and miss mate. Don't wanna spend any more moula

keep us posted how you get on matey :)

The 6990 runs HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
100% fans and 100degC during my run of Heaven 2.5 then! Man alive

My current config has the 6970 right next to the 6990, the latter of which is in the top 16x slot.

I think I am going to move the 6990 to the bottom 8x slot, giving it more air. I'll then move the 6970 to the top slot and put the Xonar/GT440 in the middle. That should help with temps

Here are some pics

Side by side with a 6970

Should I just say I have read the manual? :)

Side by side in the case - you can see the 6990 on top. I am going to change that now
You can also see that the 6990 only has one crossfire bridge connector. I have always used two, but whether to it like marmite! Some say do, some say don't. Now I can only use one

You can see the temps and GPU usage for Heaven 2.5 (using AIDA 64 and G19). This was taken around 30 seconds in, well before I say temps of 100degC and the fan automatically went up to 100!

second slot, that way if u need to disable crossfire it'll use 1 gpu

btw removing the sticker it has void the warranty with HIS

no idea why yours at 100c. mine run at 80-85c with auto fan

I have my 6990 in the top slot now and the 6970 in the bottom slot. Therefore it's running at 16x8x but actually 16x is split between the two GPUs, i.e. all GPUs are running at 8x

Just ran Heaven 2.5 at 1650x1080, 4x

If my calculations are right, I have gone from 77.4fps to 108.3 fps
That's 39% increase over two 6970s - or 78% scaling for one extra GPU - not bad scaling
Obviously this isn't a real world test - BC2 next

Temps are now better

At round 20 seconds

At around 180 seconds

I'm thinking of purchasing a 6990 and was wondering if you could tell me if it's loud during gaming.

I know gareth170 has already stated that it isn't in this thread, but just wanted further opinions.

Mate, it is no louder than a 6970. It does run slightly hot but that depends on your airflow. I game with 75% fans with a headset. I cannot think why you'd game without one :)

does your sandy bridge mobo not have two x16 pcie slots?

seems daft if not

The UD7 has 16x/8x/16x/8x (1-4 respectively). But I don't want my 6970 right next to my 6990, due to airflow. Therefore, I have my 6970 in the bottom slot, using 8x. The 6990 is in the top 16x slot but that is split between two GPUs, each getting 8x. Make sense? If I put the 6990 in the bottom slot, it's get 8x overall with 4x for each GPU. My current configuration is the best split between airflow and bandwidth

:)
