480 vs 480 soc

im not so sure on that claim Im sure thats what they "market" but i have seen very little issues with the SE or standard cards but most issues i have seen have been with the SOC but i guess pay your money and take your choice.

I have built two rigs since march with the SOC and cant recommend it enougth, some people have had problems, would recommend that you get a 700watt plus power supply with a single 12v rail. The two rigs i built one had a 700w coolermaster Pro the other a corsair 800w GX, both fine.

If you can go for the SOC version, take it over the special edition. The special edition is just the standard edition with a custom cooler. The SOC edition has cherry-picked components that meet a higher requirement standard than is needed for the others. If a component is not good enough for the SOC, it's used for the special edition or standard edition.

The so-called "cherry-picked" (GPU Gauntlet Gigabyte names it) process, ... well... as a former GTX480 SOC owner (waiting for my RMA) I would now say that it was too good to be true. Amazing performance, amazing colors, frames, etc, etc, BUT... extremely unstable (=useless).

You'd have to be mad or deaf to use the stock 480 cooling

nothing worse than sitting next to a air craft hanger

Both above comments are BS I'm afraid. I have one of the Asus GTX480s and it is nowhere near as loud as these exaggerated comments make out. Remember, the later Asus cards had a tweaked BIOS to lower voltage and temperatures (there is a review of this kicknig about on the interwebs).

Also, one of the guys who bought an Asus card managed to clock it to 850 MHz on stock volts (see the thread for more info).

My SoC is fine and overclocked to 870/2000 without any errors in OCCT @ 1.080v
Default was 820/1900 stable at 1.035v
however, it seems a lot of purchases have not been so lucky. The SE is supposed be quite good too.

Garbage, I'll eat my virtual hat if SEs are more stable than SOCs at SOC speeds (on average).
Careful, your virtual hair might fall out!
I should have pointed out that the se is more stable than a soc when both at stock speeds. My point as always was that loads, which is plainly evident by the amount of posts here, of socs are not stable even at stock clocks.

Edited above post directly.

Yes totally agree there were lots of issues with SOCs at stock compared to SEs at stock

run a stock 6970 @50% fan speed then run the gtx480 stock fan @60% and the 6970's fan is louder than the 480's fan ;) , i know i have both cards and have been told the 6970 i have is not faulty it is just hot and loud

exactly the same with me. my SOC at 100% was the same as my 6970 @ 40%

Well this has filled me full of confidence. 1 Minute i'm getting the se the next i'm getting the soc. This site is as mad as a box of frogs. Thx for the advice lads and lasses.

People's opinions will always vary as everyone's experience will be slightly different. I've only owned an SE so I can only talk about my experiences with that card, which have been nothing but brilliant. The Gigabyte 480s provide the best value for money in the UK at the moment, whether you want to risk the SOC or not is your call.

here is a real life example of mine fan @ 50% (near silent) room temp 22.5c overclock applied to well above SOC max temp achieved on 45 mins of crysis 2 79c that was with fans on auto, it did not go above 52% on the fans idle temp is now 39c

well i purchased the asus gtx480 last week and i am happy with my purchase , not that far behind a 6970 and runs cooler even with the ref cooler

Out of interest chaotic can you post up your temps on the stock cooler on idle and in a high end game crysis 2 or alike. Just interested in the difference of stock cooler to the MSI one

oki

temps after 15 min of crysis2 max detail but no aa from what i can tell lol , stopped c2 and then took screen shot of temps in Open Hardware Monitor

edit : room temp is about the 20c-22c mark with being first thing heats on for an hour lol (nesh ;) )

This to be honest. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon regarding the 480 and it's grossly exaggerated! No, it's not a quiet card but it isn't much louder than any other top end card at full tilt. The only time it becomes unbearably loud is when using furmark. And guess what, you don't play furmark. Games are fine on it.

Hijack warning,

Firstly, Chaotic - What program are you using for that mate? :)

Secondly, opinions on whether my Hiper 580w PSU power a 480 GTX SOC with the following setup:

i5 2500K
RAM 8gb
Motherboard
2 Hard drives
1 Optical Drive

I think I know my answer already really :)

in theory that PSU should be fine with a 480 check out my sig and i only run a 550W psu i have 1 optical drive and two HDDs too and i have overclocked my SE beyond the SOC
