Car parking at University going off co2

I didn't get any shocking surprise when i came to graduate. I got a couple threatening letters (they wrote to the DVLA and got my name and address from my numberplate), then they called me up and asked if they should put the charges (7 parking tickets) on my student account and i told them no, as, although i am the registered keeper, i wasn't the driver of the car.

They then tried to tell me that the registered keeper is responsible for parking tickets and politely told them they were wrong - it is the driver at the time that the alleged offence occured. They then asked for the driver details and i said i didn't know who was driving that day. Then they said they would write off the tickets.

Win.

That's because they didn't bother in your case, our university and many others certainly does bother. If you can't provide the driver details, then you as the registered keeper would receive the fine by default.

Based on your logic, you could use the same trick to blag your way out of any lovely letters you receive in the post for speeding/any other offences. Which I quite doubt you can. ;)

That's the difference between Council and Private Company fines. One is legally enforcable, the other is not.

Considering that the Uni are doing this themselves you certainly could ignore them, but they're more likely to make things uncomfortable for you. It depends how far you're willing to push it.

No they wouldn't. Registered keepers aren't at all responsible for parking fines incurred by the driver of the car.

No you couldn't, because these tickets are issued by the council/police and must be paid/driver details given over. A university is a private institution and has no right to "fine" anyone as they have no authority to do this. They also have no right to pass fines onto the registered keeper of a car and no authority demand the drivers details are handed over. In other words, they have no right to do anything.

Private parking companies rely on fear and people not knowing their rights to get their money - and i think it is totally wrong. Private institutions only have the right to claim for compensation of the money they would have lost by you parking there - which wasn't anywhere near the £15 parking "fine".

Fair enough, but what about clamping, as mentioned above?
They still clamp cars at our university, how do you get out of those considering it's a bit harder to ignore?

And ok, they are not have the same authority as the police, but what's keeping them from saying "We just automatically put these on your account and you can't graduate untill you pay them" ?

I know 100% sure that our uni will not give you your diplomma if you have any fines to pay, even if it's £2 at the library, although I'm not sure if they can transfer parking charges automatically.

Dunno, i went 2 years and got 7 parking tickets and managed to avoid the clamp somehow. I know a few girls who just cried their eyes out until they removed the fines/clamp!

Because they can't just add random things to your account without having any proof of them! For all they know, my mum could have come down to see me in my car and accrued those tickets. Or i could share my car with my housemate who ran up these tickets. So how could they put it on my account?

Same with my uni. Which is why, when i said that although i was the registered keeper i wasn't the driver, they asked if they could just put it on my account and then ask the driver to give me the money for them. And i said no, obviously.

Students don't just walk around campus all day.

What about those needing to go to sports centres or to other universities. General travel and wanting to just get away and go somewhere.

Its purely a monymaking exercise and I would love to have a car where the emissions were not known. Hmmmm an old AC Cobra maybe or a 67 Mustang then tell the Uni to do one ???

They've got that covered. Pre-2001 cars are charged by engine size.

I work there. I'd like to see what my boss says when I arrive late to deliver a 9am lecture just because the bus didn't turn up. That kind of excuse is just about as credible as "the dog ate my homework."

For something that in theory is meant to be frequent, regular and actually goes down a fairly quick and direct route, I've never understood how the no.4 bus used to be so awful. At least the ones that went all the way to Leicester had an excuse in that its easy to be 5 mins off on a longer journey like that.

RX7 and hope for no size equivelancy ?
